Hey guys!

I'm looking at doing a custom build in 300 Norma mag, is there a difference between a 110 action, or is there one specifically for .338 Lapua? Thanks!

You need to look for a "Large Shank" action... Most Savage actions are small shank for non magnum calibers and large shank for Magnum calibers and target actions. If you can find a used 300 win mag, that would be what I would look for anyway... You may find one in a 110 action even...

I would get a 338 action for the correct bolt face, but I would also consider building it on a more solid platform myself....

My first Savage was a 300winmag 111 and it's a small shank. I still have it and use it with a Shilen 300winmag barrel. No problems.

I do however agree that a Large shank would be a better idea for the 300 Norma since it will leave the chamber walls a bit thinner compared to a 300winmag, and possibly giving you extraction problems at max pressures.

Current Model 111's in 338 Lapua Mag are large shank barrels on the standard long action. The factory plastic stocks do have and aluminum bedding block and aluminum reinforcement in the forearm.

There are a lot of inaccuracies here.....

yep my 257 Weatherby started life as a 111 7mm rem mag small shank no problems at all and pretty high pressure round

Savage built Magnums on what is now small shank for a very long time.

It seems the Short Magnums had some issues and they went to Larger shank and converted or converting the rest to that.

If you have a small shank, build it on that and you won't look back.

If you have a large shank, build it on that.

There are some issues with extraction when using a small shank on a big magnum.

I believe the .338 Lapua is a different action. I'm not familiar with .300 Norma other than the old .308 Norma Mag. The latter will go on a 110 with a magnum bolt face.
