Stevens 200

I'm looking for a good starter rifle for my son and I've been considering trying to find a good used Stevens 200. Do any of you have experience with these rifles and what is your feedback on them? What can I expect to pay for one that's in good shape?

Price varies by region. They seem to command a premium around here, not sure why? You might be farther ahead to buy a newer platform since there have been changes made. Easier to find upgrades and parts over the Stevens 200. My 0.02 cents.

I have one and have had it for now for several years. It is in .223 with the light grey stock and wearing a Simmons 6 x 24 x 50 scope. Nothing expensive but has been a great shooter. Less than an inch @ 100 yards and I like pushing it out to 300.
I also got it for my son when he was much younger. It didn't have the Accutrigger so I purchased and installed a Timney trigger.
Not sure of the price today but overall it has been a great buy. I don't see how you can go too wrong.

so if I could get a nice one for 300-350 is that about the going rate? From what I've read it is the same action as model 10

When did they quit making these rifles? General retail price for any used Savage or Stevens 200 sporter in my area is around $250.

The Stevens 200 usually needs trigger work. I have a .270 M200 that has always shot well, but got better when I put a Timney trigger in it. I paid $230 new for my M200 6 or 7 years ago.
I think it's a better rifle than the Axis (I own 1 of each). I also own a M10 in .308. All 3 are good shooters, as was a very old M110 .30-06 I owned for a few years.

If you can find a decent used M10/M110, you get a better trigger for around the same money. To my thinking, the M200 has a little less value because of the trigger being not as good as a M10/M110.

I think you'll be in the $250-$300 range.

If your lucky enough to find an older 10/110 with an early 3 screw trigger, they can be adjusted to get the pull under 4 lbs.
