Rebore to what??

I traded into a 25-06 barrel that I was told was a good shooter. Turns out 4" of rifling is missing from the throat!!! Because this is a heavy fluted barrel with a brake, I don't want to waste the barrel - just rebore it. JES starts at 338 and goes up from there. I still want to do a 25 cal build so I will rebore this and sell it unfired. What do you think would sell the easiest?

You are going to spend over 200 on the rebore to sell the barrel for what? I think Jesse charges 225 or 250 for his service.

What is a rebored barrel worth?

Rechamber to what?? It will be too short (20") for the 25 Gibbs I want on that action. Is there a demand for 250 Savage heavy fluted barrels?

Just cut the 25-06 chamber deeper so you have a fresh throat.

sadly looks like you got burned. I agree selling it will be difficult. by the time you have it chopped, tenon cut and threaded, bored and re-chambered you could buy a new barrel. you'd end up losing money in my opinion.

How does he know he got burnt? He hasn't screwed it onto an action or put a single round through it - all he did was bore scoped it. The seller never said it was new or low round count (at least the OP never told us he did), they just said it was a good shooter. A barrel with 4" of nothing can still be a darn good shooter. I've seen Fred win a benchrest match with a freshly rechambered barrel that still had 6" of nothing in it after being rechambered.

Bore scopes can only tell you the condition of the bore, they can't tell you squat about how the barrel shoots.

Correct, I haven't shot it yet. Planned on reaming it to 25 Gibbs, but I don't want to do that with a poor bore. It has been 4 months since the trade so I can't go back now. I was a bit pissed at the trade anyway due to the previous owner not telling me about the rust on the outside of the barrel. I got the rust off, but the bluing came off too.
I have a lathe and can do all the trimming and threading myself. I don't have a steady rest yet so I can't chamber yet. If I cut 4" off, the OD will be right at 1". That's not enough for a 110 action. I don't even think I could use it on a SR Mauser and make it a Roberts.
I think my best bet it to trade it to somebody who is willing to get it rebored, then buy/find another 25 cal barrel for the Gibbs.

I have seen 3 times more shot out 25-06 barrels than 264 WM barrels. Either the owners of the 25-06s shoot more or the myth of a 264 being a barrel burner is just that - a myth.

I'm guessing that would be because there's probably 10x as many 25-06 barrels out there as there are 264 Win Mag barrels. ;)
