You can build one pretty cheaply Savage make some pretty nights 223 actions for around five hundred bucks and then you can barrel and stock it for another three to four hundred

I got a savage model 11 trophy hunter in a trade. It started life as a 204 Ruger but I couldld never warm up to the cartridge. Sold it and got a used 223 from a Stevens 200. ( 9 twist). What a pleasent surpise it has been. I got the 223 barrel for $75 delivered. My load is nothing exotic; Win brass, Hornady 55 gr Vmax amd H4895 But easily 1 MOA .A hog hutnter would be a good choice with the open sights, but my eyes cant do that anymore. MY advice is just jump in and geive it a chance. Any purchasde is sort of a lottery.

I agree the Mod 11 trophy hunter packages are worth considering. Mine came with a Simmons scope that was so bad I tossed it and replaced with an entry level Leupold. Current packages come with a Nikon. Don't know about the quality but probably OK. The package is a little over 7lbs. Easy to carry. My 223 with handloads has been used out to 200yds with success. Multiple shots on a hot day at the range, the hunting barrel heats up quickly, and the POI shifts. That's to be expected. I thought of re-barreling, but don't want to mess up a good thing. The action is the smoothest out of the box of the 4 Savages I own. I own 2 Mod 10's and a 12. The 11 is still the smoothest.

I have a m11 .308 with nikon... pretty good scope... optics are really clear. When I was going through barrel break in I had minor poi shifts but as I got more rounds through it, cleaning between groups that started to fade.. I can shoot now without poi shifts. (I don't get it ridiculously hot either ) it's now a reliable sub MOA rifle... very easy to reload for because the chamber tolerances are so tight, when I do have to fl resize it has very little impact on accuracy. All in all you can beat them for the price and if you do as I did with my other m11 and have a shilen 28" heavy match barrel put on, you now have a rifle that can compete with alott of the best customs out there at a fraction of the cost
