My Model 11 Savage in 270 WSM is a 1-2" shooter with a variety of bullets/powder. Good enough for deer hunting that I do but not nearly what I have come to expect from Savage.

I am interested in swapping out the barrel and bolt face to make it a 204 Ruger for shooting varmints. I am a rifle newbie, what are the chances of getting a tack driver out of this definitely average shooter in 270 WSM?

For what its worth, it isn't the shooter that makes it a 1-2 inch shooter. ;D

270 WSM just doesn't seem to be as accurate as other rounds. The 300 WSM on the other hand can be quite accurate.

Considering what you would need to convert from a WSM chambering to the 204 Ruger probably better too buy complete rifle in 204. Few barrels I've seen in 204 Ruger are over hundred dollars asking price, new bolt head, different box magazine/follower. The barrel would need to be large shank which means a custom barrel. With Stevens in the three hundred dollar range definately cost savings with new rifle.
