Let me start off by saying I'm basically a Leupold snob and am not looking for other brands. Have always shot them, they have never failed. I'm getting ready to scope a 6.5 Creedmoor build and wanted some opinions. The reason I'm asking is because I have not had a chance to view the new VX i series scopes.
Here's a few of my requirements: 1. 30mm tube 2. target turret on the elevation 3. Side focus. Should I look at one of the new ones or start cruising eBay? What would you mount on that gun? I plan to hunt and shoot 600-800 steel plates.

Leupold VX-3i 4-14x40mm with CDS, Side Focus, Wind Plex Reticle. Appears these scopes are being discontinued. So the price is right.

Wonder why they are being discontinued? Is that reticle a fine line reticle or a little heavier?

Call them and ask how much to change the reticle.
I think its $90, so it could still be a good deal.
Don't forget, they will also install a knob or both on scopes not having them.
An older straight 12x would work well also and they can be found reasonably cheap on ebay.
I think they are clearer to look thru than the variables are also.

The Wind Plex reticle is a duplex-style reticle with heavy to fine line center with windage hash marks. On the Leupold Optics web page they no longer have the CDS style low turret on VX-2 and VX-3i power scope.

For me anyway:
If it isn't FFP, with matching turrets and reticle; it should never have been made in the first place.

The new vx3i- LRP. In the 6.5-20 or 8.5-25. TMR reticle and Mil turrets. I'd would agree that FFP is a must have but some would disagree. Here is a long to optics planet.

I tried to get the reticle in my vx-6 changed to TMR and that was a $160 charge. Plus I would loose the illumination.

I decided to keep the vx-6 on a hunting rig, since it's SFP and have had my vx3i-LRP for a few months now. It tracks well and the glass is excellent. If your a Leupold guy, it's the way to go.

This is enough to put you off Leupold, or at least it should.

Sorry, forgot the link to the vx3i-LRP.

I think it's a quality piece of glass. I've come to find out that opinions on glass are pretty subjective. I've shot side by side rifles with the more expensive NF and Vortex scopes. The leupolds are my preference.

Couldn't agree more. To my eyes the Leupold has far superior glass. While the LRP is a nice scope I much prefer the capped turretes of the standard VX3i scopes. I think they look much cleaner and even with a zero stop I just don't trust an exposed turret and with as big as the turret is I feel like would be easily broken if snagged on something or dropped for sure.

i too have always been a leupold guy. i have 3 VX-6 and they are awesome scopes. my pick for any hunting rifle. lighter than the others too.

i also have a vortex PST on my grendel AR hog.gun. All it needs.

bench rifles i have a vortex golden eagle that is awesome and a Nightforce BR that is solid as a rock.

i really have no complaints with any of them. lots of solid performers out there. pick the one with the features you are looking for and have at it.

this one would.be awesome on your creedmoor. even warns you when you are canting the rifle on those long.range shots. i use a CDS dial on my main hunting.rifle. fast and works great.

Only thing I'll say at this point is that the 8.5-25 LRP definitely doesn't carry on the Leupold tradition of a generous eye box and long eye relief.
