Remington 783, similarities

I got a new 783 chambered to 223 and looked it over. I noticed a
lot of similarities to my Savages. Overall I was pretty impressed
with it, although it had the wrong barrel on it. It had a 14 inch
twist barrel, and it was supposed to be 9 inch. Right now the
gun has been shipped to one of their maintenance locations to get
the correct barrel installed.

Anyone else try the 783 and compare it to the tried and true Savage?
If so, what was your experience like?

Really? I thought I read that the thread shape was different. Did I get
the wrong info there? Seems like it was said that the threads per inch
were identical, outside diameter same, but thread shape was different.
I am not sure of that though, it has been a while since I read that and
have plenty of time to remember it wrong now.

It is the same. The Marlin XL7's, XS7's, then simply the X7, which has now become the Rem 783 takes standard small shank barrels.
I've got a Pre-fit Savage Barrel from GunShack on my XL7. When I re-barreled it years ago, on the Marlin forum they claimed there was a difference in thread spec, but it's a case of how far you want to take the decimel with accuracy. The Marlin/Rem also have interchangable bolt head parts.

I don't know if the 783 has the same bolt head groove that the Marlin uses as a guide for the bolt to travel in, but my Marlin is VERY smooth for bolt travel.

Interestingly, the 783 (and its predecessors) weren't meant to compete with the Axis. They were meant to undercut the 110. The Axis and its descendents were meant to take back that segment of the market.

I didn't realize they took Savage barrels. This might call for some experimentation!

Never really heard about the 783, as I have never really paid much attention to commercial rifles (except for savage). I have always been a mil-surp rifle kind of guy.
So I had to google the 783. Holy cow. That things pretty much looks like a savage knockoff/copy. Barrel nut, floating bolt head that looks just like a savage, safety tab on the trigger.
I guess the old saying, "imitation is the most sincere form of flattery", so when savage makes such a good rifle, people want to copy it.

Just wondering if the 7mm magnum 783 is going to be a small shank, or if they take a large shank like the savage magnums.

Most of the savage mags are small shank. There are a few Large shanks, WSMs, and Ultra mags and a few "regular" mags. But mostly the mags are small shanks.
