Model 99

Just purchased a model 99 chambered in 308. I am familiar to reloading just not for this gun. It has the rotary magazine and reading up on the subject I read that some bullets are too long to fit into the magazine. Can I purchase over the counter cartridges that work? Do I have to reload to make sure the OAL is short enough to work. Thanks in advance

Standard hunting cartridges should be fine. It's the longer bullets in match ammo that could pose problems.

Loaded ammo from manufacturers such as hornady, sierra, nosler, ect, should all be loaded to 2.8".

Have had two 99's in 308. As above, standard hunting ammunition should be fine. You might consider taking up reloading. 99's are capable of phenomenal accuracy if you don't "hotrod" them. For the most part starting loads for 150-168gr were the best in mine. Have shot more than a few groups less than 1 MOA. Full length resize works best.

So Hornady ballistic tips or like bullets are fine? What was your powder of choice for use in your 99-.308

I always stayed with Sierra's. Particularly the 165gr HPBT with IMR4064.

I agree with WBM, full length resize your brass, and use 165gr bullets. I and some of my buddies have had really good luck with Varget and 165gr. bullets.

Yeah, I second the full length sizing. I took all the fire formed brass from my 99c 308, neck sized, trimmed, turned necks and chamfered inside and out. Loaded test rounds .5 gr increments and went to the range to test. :o They would not chamber, had to pull bullets and full length resize to bump the shoulder back then they would chamber.

Especially the 99' S.
I haven't ran into that with my .308 99, I just automatically full length resized my brass for it.
The 99 was way ahead of it's time, and using modern cartridges is an amazing thing that I'm sure Arthur was looking down and smiling about.
