View Full Version : Bolt Head Swap?

Hi guys, I've tried a couple of barrels swaps, but not one that required a different bolt head before now. I am trying to convert one fo my .270's to a 300 win mag, but when I got the slotted screw bolt apart, I found that it had the large firing pin diameter, then I took the hex head bolt apart and it also had the large firing pin diameter.

I had ordered a new magnum bolt head from midway, and needless to say, it wouldnt work with either of the bolts that I have.

Can i still find left handed magnum bolt heads that will work with the old style firing pin assembly? If so where do I find them?

If that isnt an option, can I swap out firing pin/striker assembly to the newer diameter? Would that be an easy swap or will I have to change/ modify the bolt body?

Where do I go from here?

thanks in advance,

-Scott

You can drill out the bolt head for the large firing pin.
If I remember right it takes a #25 drill bit.
If nobody else chimes in do a search for large firing pin to
small bolt head. It's easy I had to do it to change a 110
223 to 30-06 bolt head.

Same here, I did the .223 to a .308, I had a machinist do mine as he was doing some other work for me, but you can easily do it yourself, #25 drill and just measure the depth you need to go, it's not a critical measurement but does need to be close. It'll take you longer to set up the tools than to make the cut.
I also had the locating slot cut into the bolt, be aware if you have that also, some will just grind out the detent from the bolt body.
This is posted in the tec section somewhere.

If you don't want to drill yours out, I'll trade you a LH Mag bolthead for your LH 270 one.
