Hey everyone,

I have a Savage 11 in .308 that I would like to convert to .223. It is a centerfeed, factory DBM, top bolt release, no accutrigger (phew, I wish Savage would just stick with one design). I have no issues with changing the barrel and have the bolt head with parts. I was just wondering if the DBM will take a .223 magazine?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, all of the short action magazines will fit into your magazine frame.

Yes, all of the short action magazines will fit into your magazine frame. The .223 magazine is the same as .308, but savage rivets in a spacer pushing the cartridges forward, and uses a shorter follower and spring.

Some .223 baffles have a little wing that shortens the stroke on the bolt as well.

^^^^Not quite. The mag box, spring and follower for the .308 is considerably different than the .223.

Both use the same bottom cap and bottom metal/frame for the stock.

My point was the magazines are pretty much the same exterior shape and size. It is the guts inside the .223 magazine that has a spacer for a smaller follower, and of course the feed lips, etc. So, you can't change a .308 to .223 or the other way.
