Shopping For A Barrel?????????

I'm in the market for a pre-fit Savage barrel...

Got a steal of a deal on a Savage 110 270Win for $180.00 dollars at a local pawn shop. I've already pulled the barrel, just received a Choate tactical stock Monday...EGW base and Vortex high rings...so the next big dollars go for a barrel.

I'd like to stay under $400.00, but would like for it to shoot very well.

I've been infected by the 6.5 bug...just built a 6.5-06 on a Colombian mauser action and want to build another one. I had it barreled by Douglass and they said I'd be fine with the 1:9 twist but I've had some issues getting it to shoot 140gr bullets. So I want this one to have the 1:8 twist because I want to air out the lead shooting out to a grand.

I'd prefer stainless, but it's not a deal breaker if it's CM...

Pretty much any of the usual options will apply. You can get a Shilen or Criterion pre-fits through NSS. Apache offers X-Caliber and Green Mountain I believe, maybe a few others. Gun Shack stocks McGowen pre-fits. Most all of the pre-fits are priced under $400. All are button rifled and in my experience are pretty even when it comes to accuracy potential. Just look through this board a bit and you'll find plenty of examples of each with photo's of tiny groups.

Definitely go with a 1-8 twist though.

I have one I bought from them on a AR15 and really like it. So much so that I just ordered one (last night) in 308 for a left hand savage build I am working on.
Now if you are wanting one right now, you may want to go somewhere else, as they have a good backlog at the moment. (that to me is a good sign) But if you don't mind waiting, you will get a really nice barrel.

There are a lot of good barrels available within your budget. I chose to just add a couple "Benjamin's" to your budget and got a Benchmark barrel for the Savage I built earlier this year. Couldn't be happier as it's shooting sub .25 MOA on a daily basis using 147 gr ELD-M's and a refined hand load. Takes about 3 months lead time but you get a hand lapped barrel ready to install. Their barrels tend to be about 100 fps faster than other's I've used and are super easy to keep clean. Their lapping is as smooth as it gets.

Yes, the Benchmark Barrels do cost more but they also deliver more when looking for precision and accuracy.

If you are not fixed on the 6.5 -06 Lothar Walther offers up a couple of 6.5s in Varmint Contour at a very good price.

I have read some on the 6.5s and the 260 Remington has a following. Not big into it but it seems it can do some things the others can't with the larger case (and again excuse the ignorance, I could have that wrong )

6.5 Norma is another one (I don't know that much about it)

I won't say that the LW barrel is a cut rifled one, but it sure has been nice to shoot and quicker load development than the others (which are doing pretty good as well, Shilen and the XC if finally coming along)

I do like the better interior finish on the LW as it lends itself to a faster clean up.

I am split on CBI. Good reports, but I tend to go with personal experience. Ergo, LW for the 308.

Nothing but good reports from CBI though for sure.

The 06 replacing for when the Shilen it wears out maybe a good one to try it on.

You can put a Criterion 26 inch Stainless Steel, Match in any of a number of 6.5 variants at Northlandshooterssupply.com for $300. Shilin for about $40 more. I just put a Criterion 6mmBR Norma Bull 28 inch on a Savage action. Shoots very well as does my Criterion 8 twist 26 inch in 223.

I would also add Benchmark to the list. I installed one on my sons FTR gun and it's shooting absolutely fantastic. Plus they can also accommodate a longer length than some others.

Another CBI fan here... I've got 3 of them and all are shooters... (2) 22-250 and (1) 260 Rem Match... I would also consider a Shilen. I've heard they are pretty much equal.

I built my 260 for the same exact reason you did. Busting 8" gongs at 1000 yards, and varmints (fox, coyote, rabbit, prairie dogs). And for the 140s you want the 8 twist.

Another CBI vote here. Used 8 of them in 6.5x284, 6.5 Creedmoor, 243, and 7mm mag and they have all been good shooters.
