View Full Version : .640 Bolt Face?

We just got our latest shipment of Savage parts, and as usual, there was a few mix ups in the parts and we got a few things we didn't order in place of what we did order. Interestingly, we receive something I have never seen before. At first I thought it was a 338 Lapua bolt head, but after putting the calipers on it, it appears to be a .640 bolt face. Does anyone know if Savage ever produced a rifle based on any cartridges that have a .640 rim diameter?

Regards,
Lance

That's 505 Gibbs territory! Maybe a handful of wildcats with that diameter, but I don't think that savage factory chambered anything.

20G shotgun shells have a .615" rim. Maybe the 220 bolt action shotguns uses that bolt head. Just thinkin' out of my rear.....

It must be for their new Chey Tac Axis.

It would seem this is the viable answer.

Don't know what 20ga shell's you're measuring, but the few I just checked all measure around 0.765" on the rim.

Not sure what the .640 bolt head would be for. The .338 Lapua case head is 0.588" so I would imagine the bolt head for it would measure somewhere around 0.600". An additional 0.040" of clearance would be a lot even by Savage's typically loose standards.

It's simple.....that bolt head is a screw up, they get out from time to time. At .640", it's too big for the extractor to even fit proper.

Yeah I'm an idiot. I didn't grab a shell and measure the rim (even though I have boxes of 20G shells here for my Savage 24V). I google searched for "shotgun shell rim diameters" and got this image below. Too dumb to notice that the **** thing was showing bore diameters......

Here's a chart with all the dimensions...............including rim diameters. Looks like a person could use that bolt head for their very own 32gauge bolt action shotgun....
