110 FCP 338 LM performance

I bought the Savage 110 FCP because my research showed it provided, in my opinion, the best bang for your buck…no pun intended. I own and shoot a lot of military rifles which have a 1-3 MOA performance expectation. I have a good hunting rifle which is a 1.5 – 2 MOA shooter. I wanted a good precision rifle for long range. I chose the 338 Lapua Magnum caliber due to its superior wind performance at long range. Clearly this is the most accurate rifle I have owed and I have shot my best consistent groups with it. I am by no means a good shot but I can consistently shoot .75 MOA. Typically 3-4 shots in my group are .5 MOA with my poor marksmanship skills resulting in a spread out to .75 MOA with the remaining 1 or 2 shots. I am very pleased with this rifle and know I am the limiting factor in my group sizes, it will help me to improve my skills. I have read in other forums how the sniper/tactical rifles are a “fad” and will wear off becoming gun safe queens. For myself I highly doubt that is true. I have never had a rifle as fun to shoot as my FCP. While doing some research I found the performance specs for the M24 and M40 military sniper rifles. They are listed below:

According to MIL-R-71126(AR), 3.15.7 Targeting and Accuracy, The rifle shall achieve the dispersion set forth below when fired from a Government approved machine rest. The average mean radius shall be less than or equal to the values stated below. Range / Average Mean Radius (AMR) — Mean Radius (MR) expresses the average distance of all the shots from the center of the shot group. AMR averages the MR of several shot groups.


200 yards (183 m): 1.3 inches
250 metres (273 yd): 1.4 inches
300 yards (274 m): 1.9 inches

The radial distance from the calculated center of impact of the first target compared to the calculated center of impacts of the subsequent targets shall be less or equal to 1.086 MOA (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minute_of_Angle) (3.3 inches @ 300 yards, 2.2 inches @ 200 yards, 2.4 inches @ 200 meters) on a average basis.

What this tells me is my 110 FCP, with a good military marksman, would have no trouble qualifying. You can buy better rifles…a company guaranties .25 MOA at a higher cost than the $1600 I paid for my FCP. Given it would not shoot any better than my 110 in my hands I think it would be a waste of money. Anyone who says Savage rifles are not worth their money, I doubt has ever shouldered one. True the 110 FCP is a higher end Savage.

Congrats on your rifle. I enjoy mine every second I shoot with it. Got to stretch it out to 1000 yards recently. Once dialed in, hit every shot. I have a Burris XTR-II 4-20x50 on mine. I shoot Hornady 285 ELD-M with H-1000. No plans to try other bullets anytime soon. Trigger is super smooth. Wish my Savage 10T 308 was as smooth. Best value for a 338LM. Was going to get the stealth but wanted a longer barrel. Glad I bought this one.

Glad to see that a stock .338LM 110FCP can perform so well. Which stocks do you fellows have on your rifles (HS Precision or the Accustock with the adjustable cheek rest)?

I spent a bunch of time testing my Savage .338 prior to going out west last weekend and ELR shooting. A Berger 300 Hybrid around 2800 was the most accurate for long range.

Using the stock that came with mine from savage. Works fine. My 285 ELD-M is getting 2760 fps. Have a touch hotter load I developed but not near my notes to post it. Its a great rifle for the money. Accurate as hell too. Just buy her 2 sewing machines. You will get your rifle and maybe some action too. :(
