I'm trying to develop a load for 300 to 500 yard target shooting
using the 77 grain sierra's.So far the best I can get with any
powder is about 1.5 inch at 300 yds. How far are you guys letting
the bullet jump? I was trying .010 today..Powders used were
748,rx15,imr 4166,cfe 223 and H4895..Winchester brass and
cci 400 primers in a bolt actin from a rest on the bench.Thanjs for
any advice you have to offer..

Sierras accuracy load is RE-15 24.1 grs. @2750 fps/1293 ft.lbs.
They used Rem 7 1/2 primers. I drop a few tenths of a grain with CCI.

What powder scale?

Make and condition of brass?

Need to weigh brass and billets along with proper prep work to brass to get small groups at that range.

1 1/2" group at 300 yrds? That is a half MOA group. Pretty good. For every tenth smaller it will take a lot of work with reloading techniques and components. That is if you have a rifle that is capable.

What rifle?

What the procedure for weighing brass? I would think after sizeing and trimming..And what weight difference does it have to be in..I do weight the bullets..All brass has the pockets reamed and flash holes debured..

Heck with the OCD weighing everything to a gnats pimple with no statistical proof. Try something simple that works-

Switch primers. Try 7 1/2's, 450's, 205M's. One of them will show an advantage.

Primers are as much a variant as powder type, charge weight, and seating depth. Once you've found a pretty decent consistent load that doesn't shotgun, just switching primers can tighten it up considerably. Or turn it into a shotgun.

I would go with cci 450

I believe the 77 smk was developed for mag use and i've found they like to jump. I load mine a 2.245". LC brass 09 and up, 23.2-24gr of 8208xbr is a common proven load lit with a cci 450 or rem 7 1/2. I personally use wolf srm's but they can't be found anymore to my knowledge. i'd love to find more. I do a light crimp with a lee fcd but I only use these in my gas guns currently.

I also sub the smk for the nosler CC and generally buy the "cosmetic blemished" from shooter pro as I feel they shoot just as well for a fraction of the cost.

being that you have a bolt gun i'd also reccomend you try the hornady eld-m offerings or if you can buy a stockpile of the 75 or 80 amax's they are also a great bullet. the BC is leaps and bounds above the dated 77 smk
