Does anyone know if the barrel nuts of Savage (small shank) and Remington 783 are interchangeable?

I know the standard Rem. 700 is different, but no clue on the 783 as I haven't tore into one. Best bet would be to call or email James at Northland Shooters Supply as he offers pre-fit barrels for the 783.

the 783 is exactly the same as savage small shank, just put a savage barrel on one recently , worked great

783's are the same as what they "replaced", which is the Marlin X7 series rifle. They in fact do take standard Savage Small shank barrels and nuts.
I re-barreled my XL7 several years ago with a Savage drop-in from Gun Shack.

Oh ok, thanks darkker.
Well then, that's just another rifle I can keep my eyes open for at the pawn shops.
I've not held one of them, how do you like the action and such?
Interesting how the "old ugly savage barrel nut" seems to be copied alot over the last several years isn't it?

Indeed. I PM'd a member about an older thread earlier this morning about a Ruger; since you can drop-in any Ruger with a nut now as well.

I REALLY like my Marlin. When they first came out, the long actions = XL7 and the shorts called XS7. Later after Cerberus got a hold of them and stuffed them into Remington they became known simply as X7's, regardless of long or short actions. Later being dropped entirely and the 783 put in place of. The 783's are not the same rifle, but take the same barrels and floating bolt-heads.

I really like the X series of rifles, VERY smooth bolt throw; and can typically be found for $150-200 currently!
The trigger is a Crap-U-trigger type affair that is adjustable, that doesn't have tons of creep and no half-drops. The receiver is round instead of flat bottomed, but besides that has the same inlet footprint as an Winchester M70.

Since the patents ran out the floating bolt head, barrel nut and trigger blade are getting copied left and right.

Barrel nuts are a very old military trick, not a Savage invention.
