The October-December 2009 The Varmint Hunter has an interesting article on necking down David Tubb's 6XC to 22.

Case capacity between the 22-250 and 22-243.

Well, since the 6XC is based on a necked up and improved 22-250, it seems like a 22XC would be very similar to 22-250AI.

Did The Varmint Hunter make this comparison?

LOL...I read through that article and immediately thought of you Art. The exact words I uttered were, "Hammer isn't going to like this. Now he's going to have to replace all his 'last 220 Swift' barrels with ones chambered for this new-fangled cartridge." ;D

Nah, nothing will replace the 22 K-Hornet, the 218 Mashburn Bee, the 219 Donaldson Wasp, the 222 Remington, the 222 Remington Magnum, and the 220 Swift.

The 22XC looks like an interesting cartridge -- between the 22-250 AI and the 22-243 in case capacity -- and one I might play with. But think it falls in the category of a paper punching cartridge -- not a varmint cartrdge. Besides, the 22XC would take a custom made die set and everyone knows I wouldn't stand for that.

One should use real cartridges on prairie dogs and groundhogs (rockchucks).

I'm using a 6XC Pac Nor w/8 twist....to me its the ultimate LR 6mm....
Not a powder hog or barrel burner with 36/H4895 & 80-90 gr NBTs
37/H3450 w/107 SMKs

Currently using the 6 x 47 (6mm/222 Rem Mag), 6BR, 6XC, 6-250, 243 Win, 6mm Rem, 240 Wby, and 6mm-06 Mashburn in the 6mm family.

The 6mm-06 Mashburn with a 30-inch long, 8-inch twist barrel is pretty good out past fifty yards.

Why not just go with a 22-250RCBS improved? Its nothing more than a 22-250 blown out but the 28* shoulder angle is retained. The 22XC is the same thing except with a 30* shoulder.

I used a 22-243 midd reamer (30* shoulder) to short chamber a 22-250 case before. It wasnt worth my time messing with it really. Had nothing to offer over the standard 22-250AI.

The magazine article said that the 22XC had water capacity of 49.0 grains, but don't know how that was measured.

Haven't measured the water capacity of either the 22-250 Improved or the 22XC or taken the dimensions and calculated the case capacity.

Typo?
The cartridge is made from a 22-250 case blown out to 30* and elongated .145". It cant hold more powder than a 22-250AI. Surely cant hold 22-243 powder capacity since the reamer is held short of full length chambering.

Hammer you didn't list 219 zipper, 22hp, or the 22 rem jet. you must have a couple of those laying around.

Within the family of prairie dog cartridges, have a few good ones to choose from.

A few come to mind.

14 Walker
17 Fireball
17 Remington
20 Tactical
22 Hornet
218 Bee
221 Fireball
222 Remington
222 Remington Magnum
22 PPC
22 BR
219 Donaldson Wasp
220 Swift
22/6mm
6 x 47
6XC
6-250
243 Winchester
6mm Remington
240 Weatherby
6mm-06 Mashburn
25-20 Winchester
250 Savage
257 Roberts
25-06 Remington
257 Weatherby
264 Winchester Magnum
7mm-300 Weatherby
32 ACP
32-20 Winchester
32 H&R Magnum
380 Auto

Am sure there are some others if I think about it a while.

Some work well for close up shots (less than 25 yards).

Others are better for long range (up to 50 yards).

Whoa that sounds a lot like my 6mm-250 which runs 37 gr RL15 under 75 gr Hornady HPs & 43 gr of RS-Hunter under a moly'd 90 Speer.

Never tried anything longer than a 100 gr FB Interlock, though.
