Hi all first post here!!!! I need to make a 75-120 yard shot in 5 weeks so I wanted to pick up a cheap rifle capable of doing that. I came across a savage model 116 cheap locally so I purchase it, only thing is I'm not exactly sure what I got lol.
It says savage model 116 30-06 spg, it's a stainless barrel with a Nikon prostaff 3-9x40. I will post pictures, can someone please tell me what module exactly it is I purchased.

You got a good one !

It's the 116 Trophy Hunter.

The newer 16 / 116 have a bottom bolt release in front of the trigger guard and the barrel nut is smooth.

I say you got a good one because it's more convenient to have a top (top-side) bolt release and the castellated barrel nut if you want to change barrels yourself.

Mod 10, 11, 12, 14 & 16 are short action and 110, 111, 112, 114 & 116 are long action.

Good accurate and not very expensive deer ammo is the Federal Fusion. Get the 165 gr. Or Federal Premium 165gr Gameking (very accurate)

Enjoy your new friend.

I don't believe that's a Trophy Hunter. Maybe an old 116 XP model from the Package Series. To me it looks like the rifle has a flat-back receiver and blind magazine which would make it a staggered-feed. If that's the case it was made well before the Trophy Hunters came along.

To the O/P, the chart in the following thread will tell you when it was made based off the serial number.

I think you made a fine purchase if you got it for under 500. under 400 a good deal and under 350 a great deal. I like the older flat backs. I think many of them operated smoother. Besides the ammo Zero suggested the Hornady Whitetail ammo is good to go as well

Yep looks like an older flat back receiver. If I had to guess mid to late 90s manufacture.
Darn fine rifles and the 3 screw triggers tune up very nicely. Pretty sure it wasn't a package gun because I don't think they put Nikons on them during that time period. If it was a package gun I'm almost positive it didn't come with that scope from the factory. I seem to remember the package guns at that time period coming with a lower end but functional Bushnell scopes with the exception being a model 10 police rifle package that came with a nice Leupold Vari X3, a pelican case, and Harris bi pod (all that for $800) that has since been discontinued. Pretty sure yours came as a 116fss (F=synthetic stock, SS=stainless steel) and was called the 116 weather warrior due to it's low maintenance and weather resistant synthetic and stainless construction. (the triggers though silver in color aren't stainless and will rust). I have a couple of them from this time period and they are very good rifles. Find the ammo it likes best (mine in 30-06 likes 165-168gr bullets) and I think you'll like it a lot.

Thanks everyone so much for the info. The Nikon I don't believe came with the gun and was purchased by the previous owner. Yeah I picked it up for $225 wasn't really sure what I was getting because I'm not familiar with bolt actions but for that price I said what the heck seems like a great deal. Is there any upgrades in particular that are good for this gun? Anything as far as wear and tear I need to look out for? I'm excited to shoot it within the next couple of days.

Wanna make a quick $100 Lol. I'll give you $325.

Lots of upgrades available depending on what you want to modify and the amount you want to spend. Some things like ejector and extractor seem to need a little more attention than average.

Upgrades? Yes sir, Do this http://www.savageshooters.com/content.php?130-Factory-3-Screw-Trigger-Adjustment-Procedures
Be sure after you have replaced the trigger spring and adjusted the screws to lock down the screws with some nail polish to prevent recoil from making unwanted further adjustments. (locktite may lock it too tight IMO)
Heres something else you can try that may make a big difference http://www.accurateshooter.com/technical-articles/savage-action-screw-torque-tuning/
It should shoot the lights out after you find the load it likes. Mine certainly did.

Then tune up your Ammo. Mine loves 165 -168gr Gamekings and Accubonds with a worked up to max charge of IMR 4350 CCI BR2 primers in Winchester brass touching the lands. Your mileage may vary on the load as every rifle seems to be little different in which load it likes. I shoot this load because it's accurate for me not because it's hot and didn't come alive till I got to max at 57gr.
with the trigger tuned up and a good load you should be impressed with how well the rifle shoots.
Man I love the 116s and in my experience it doesnt take much to make them hum.
