Long action, short action cartridge?

Anyone ever used a long action for a short action cartridge? I'm considering building a 260 using a long action. Will there be any issues?

If you single load, no.

If you want the magazine to work, whole different story.

Get a box of 260 and see how it does (just feeding into the magazine, no more than that. )


Cartridge head on your long action will drive the bolt head fit.

Have a buddy with a long 260. Feeds like a champ. I would prefer the 260 on a long action so you can stretch out them long 140s

The Military has been using a SA Cartridge in a long action for a long time. The M-24 is such a combo, .308 Cartridge and LA Remington receiver.

I worked on a 243 many years ago that was built on a Long Action. Cartridges were fussy in where they fit in the magazine (box). I can't recall if it was all the way forward or all the way back but my .223 SA has a similar issue. Remington just put a filler in the magazine box to make sure all cartridges were forward.

Case diameters, for the most part are close enough that they feed just fine in an LA.

I use all LA stagger feed. 22/250, 6x47L, 6.5x47L, 243, 308, 7-08, don't have any long cartridges. If there is a feeding issue, you just tweak the magazine lips a little. I find that you load the magazine making sure the cartridge bases are completely to the rear they will feed just fine. If i was going to hunt something that might eat me, I would be using something with controlled feed and preferably a double rifle.

Gonna be fine, if it feeds goos now. The .260 cartridge is pretty much the same as the .308 as far as the magazine and feeding are concerned.

I built a .243 on a Long Action, feeds fine, no issues.

So glad to hear that the 260 feeds well from a LA. I'm in the middle of building one myself. Just been waiting on the barrel to get here. Mine started out (and still is at the moment) as a 270.

That's how I did mine. I single load so I filled the mag well of my choate stock with jb weld and when it was a putty like consistency, I took a really long OAL dummy round coated in sizing wax and formed a feed ramp that perfectly feeds into the chamber without any bullet contact. The jb adds weight and dries out pretty smooth. Nice cheap way to do it in my opinion. Rosco on this forum can hook you up with an xcaliber barrel. If you are going to throw 140gr, consider going for the 260 match chamber as it has more free bore so you can seat them out long and take advantage of the longer action. i'm doing the same once I get time to put it together. going to start with 140gr rdf's .020 off the lands. I bought a magpul mag to try with the ptg dbm. also plan on trying reloader 26 to boost the velocity up from this boat anchor of a 28" barrel.

Give it a shot! I ended up getting best results from a4350, which is handy since h4350 is inobtanium these days...

Thanks for the info guys. For some reason I've got the bug to build a rifle, the thought of intrigues me. I've messed with hot rods all of my life and enjoy fabricating, I get a lot of satisfaction out of building something then using it.

exactly! if I could find h4350 i'd go that route without question. since I can't I figured i'd give RE26 a shot. figured I may get some extra velocity or at least get equal velocity with less pressure which should translate into longer brass life. but ES SD will be the deciding factor

Savage does not make them but "Intermediate " length actions are out there to address this specific need.

Are you shooting Berger Hybrid 140's? I seat mine at about 4 thow off the lands because my mag's (Magpul AICS) max OAL is 2.86, the Hybrids don't mind the jump.

As a side note the AW mag and one model of the accurate mag will accept rounds with an OAL of 2.9X

H4350 is out there if you put some effort into it. My shooting buddy has purchased 16lbs in the past month. Skip ahead a few pages in your google search, obviously every one is gonna Look at the first page of results. Personally I have been using IMR 4350 and 4451 with good results.

BTW: if you don't mind paying a premium GunBroker often has H4350

Had a Savage 116 in 308 (long action receiver, short action cartridge) it was never an issue.
