Took my less than a week old, "Walmart-Special" .270 model 10-something combo out today after proper break in and 100 yard sight-in!
Loaded same load... only difference bieng bullet... 58.5 grains of H4831sc, Winchester brass/Large rifle primers... w/Hornady Interbonds (have a crap load of'em) and Seirra Gamekings both 130 grains... ten-thousandths off the lands. (measured w/hornady oal guage.)
Best group w/Gamekings was 1.7 inches and Interbonds were right at an inch. (1st and 3rd bullet holes touching, second shot made it an inch.)
What would you experts out there recommend next??? Could some of you please share your "pet .270, 130 gr. loads" please? Thanks!!!
I really want to experience that "Definition Of Accuracy" for myself... thanks!

No two rifles shoot the same, but here's what works in mine:

Brass: R-P
Bullet: 130 Grain Nosler Ballistic Tip
Primer: CCI 200
Powder: RL-22
Charge Weight: 58 grains (as always-start lower & work your way up watching for pressure signs!)

Since you mention this is a brand new gun-have you followed any break in procedure? I've heard it said that some guns shoot better after some rounds down the tube. You may find better accuracy simply after shooting it some more.

Let us know what you find works best.

...Try .015 off the lands.. ;)...Myself I use Nosler 130's with H4350...

The 130grn is a classic bullet for the .270 but the 140s shot better for me.

Nosler 140grn BT
Win brass
55ggrns of H4831
CCI 200s
Just touching the lands

Bugholes at 100, .75 at 200, 1.5 at 300 and ring the gongs at our local range at 400 and 500 until you get bored.

Thanks guys... I'm headed back out to the range today... dropped the powder charge by half a grain... but loaded 3 different lengths... 5, 10, and 17 thousandths off the lands. Hopefully I'll get an idea of what lengths it likes and doesn't like, I'll keep you all posted!

How did it do?

Ok, went out again... I'm really starting to think that my rifle just flat doesn't like 4831sc. The accuracy improved on the .005 and marginally better on the .017 thousandths. I think I'm going to start over...
Bought a pound of IMR4350... this time I'll just load the same Hornady Interbonds all the same length-20 thou. off the lands... since Max load is 55 gr. I'll load every whole and half grains inbetween from 53 to 55. Once I get an idea of which powder charge does best... then I'll go back and fiddle w/the O.A.L's after that this time! This will take a couple of weeks to accomplish... I'll let you all know what happens when I find something out! Thanks!

I have had great results using IMR4064. Just my two cents.

I went through the same thing with mine, only I was chasing a bullet it liked, not powder. Load development = half the fun and all of the frustration.

My .270 just flat don't like 130 grain bullets! It shoots 140 grain Ballistic tips well and so far has done the best with 150 grain Partitions. It also doesn't like H4831 ??? but loves IMR 4350. This rifle broke all the .270 rules but once I found the combination it likes it is a shooter! Keep plugging away at and sooner or later you will hit pay dirt.

My pet load for quite a few 270's that I have worked with is the load that didn't work for you. 58gr. H4831, a 210-M primer and a 130gr. NBT or Sierra ProHunter. If it doesn't like the NBT, it usually loves the ProHunter. I have not had good luck with Hornady bullets in general, and spotty luck with Nosler Accubonds, but the Ballistic Tip and that ProHunter are my go to bullets for everything Whitetail.

Had a Winchester Model 70 .270 with BOSS and took it to the range the first time with 130 grain Nosler ballistic tips and 53 grains of 4350 just to get it on paper. In three adjustments of the BOSS the rifle was shooting groups 5/8 of an inch.

Moral of story..............You still have "bad vibes" :'(

+1 on not liking the 130 grainers, especially the SGK's. My advice is to use the 150 Nosler Ballistic tips. My pet load is this:

56.5 grains of H4831SC
Mag. primer
150 gr. NBT
2975 fps 24" barrel.
Dime group accuracy.

Everyone wants velocity so they opt for the smaller bullet but in reality the larger bullets perform better on game for a small sacrifice in velocity.

I recently made up some test loads for my brotherinlaws new 270, hunting rifle only, I used 4831 and 7828 because thats what I had on hand, his 111 with a sporter barrel liked the 7828 better with 140 gr bonded corelokt bullets, shot just over 1 inch at 200 yards.

I'm pretty new to all of this, but I will offer up a load that has shot amazingly well in my model 110 .270. A friend of mine loaded them up for me, and they are shooting sub 1" at 200yds for me. 130grain Nosler Accubond with 55grains of hybrid 100 powder and cci mag primers.

I am not satisfied with my hand loads unless I achieve 1/2 MOA. This is obtainable if the shooter is up to it.

My advise is to take those 1" loads and rework it with small incremental charge changes and or let out the seating depth a small amount.

The latest... sorry guys, forgot to post what I found... I got 54.5 grains of IMR 4350, Winchester Brass/LR primers combo... .030" off lands is giving me .25 and .50 groups all day! I don't think they're going very fast though... right about 3000 fps! I'd like to be up around 3050!
