Just picked up a 10 BA Stealth .308 and noticed that there is an exposed spring sticking out in the area below the bolt handle. This is my first Savage bolt action so unfamiliar with the nuances. Is this normal? I can't post pics currently and thanks in advance

Would that be in the slot the bolt handle fits into when down?

Between the stock and the action?

Certainly not normal to have anything exposed mechanism wise let alone a spring.

It almost sounds like part of the trigger mechanism.

I would pull the gun out of the chassis and take a look.

One way around the pictures is to get someone to PM you with their email.

Have done that.

Here is photo sent me.
I think that is spring is what the safety rides on.

I had to look up the gun to be sure what I was looking at.

That looks like a standard Savage action, top bolt release, nuted barrel, acu trigger. There is no spring in that location on any of my two nor my newer Bottom Bolt release.

That is just plain weird.

Good picture but does that spring sit in a hole through the receiver?

Someone who owns one should chime in but that is totally abnormal. Guns never have springs sticking out like that.

Does it dry fire ok? It does look like one of the trigger springs.

I would get ahold of Savage unless someone chimes in and says something, I just don't buy they would do that. Even if it was new there would be a mechanism on top of the spring not just a bare spring.

Thanks for reading the reply! Yeah that pic was literally right out of the box and I noticed it as I installed the bolt. Doesn't appear to go through the reciever at all and it dry fired just fine and cycled snap caps no problem. Will be calling savage tomorrow to get this figured out.

That spring is in the trigger hanger. The safety bar rides on it. If you remove the bolt you can move the safety and see where contact is made. It's not in the action. The chassis has a rather wide bolt handle notch and that's why it's exposed.

Here are photos of both TBR and BBR actions with Accutrigger.

In a normal stock you don't have as much exposed. They have a much smaller notch for bolt handle.

I was too tired to take a look at one of mine last night.

Explained but not something I am impressed with.
