22-250, or .243 (6mm) is all you need for 2-300 yards... If you're hunting deer size game then the .243 is the better way to go.

223 will shoot to 300 Yards fine in a bolt action length barrel (original was 20 inches, so that, 22 or 24 would do fine

243 is a nice round, particularly if hunting. But if you shoot it a lot then the barrel goes faster than some others. (for a Savage guy though its just a good reason to get a new barrel!)

6.5 Creed and Lapua are both designed to shoot well out to 1000 yards and be as easy on barrels as you can make em. They are also very inherently accurate.

Ammo availability is a priority for someone who does not load. The 223 and the 243 are good there. For other considerations, the 7mm08 and the 6.5 Creedmoor are also a great lower recoiling rounds with the 140 class boolits.

I have an 11VT in 243 and it shoots sub MOA out to 300 without a problem. My load of choice is 80 GR nosler ballistic tip on top of 40.3 GR of RL 15, I use either CCI or FEd primers with little to no difference.
