So my 16 LWH in 6.5 Creedmoor has been claimed by my wife. I was going to buy another 10 FCP-SR in 6.5 Creedmoor 20" barrel but I have a Howa HB .308 that's a tack driver. It has a 20" barrel but since it'll be a 500 yard and under gun I'm thinking of cutting down the barrel to 18" and threading it. I'd like the weight savings but I'd hate to throw off the barrel harmonics (if that's possible) and effect accuracy. I've seen the barrel cutting velocity tests but the don't talk about accuracy.

I think I'm over thinking it and it might only change POI but I'm hoping some folks have done something similar in the past.

I haven't seen the "new" 10 FCP-SR in 6.5CM, only 308. And I just so happen to have one in the 24" model. I'm averaging .787" @ 200 yards with 44.6gr (max) Varget and 185gr Berger Juggernauts. Once I get my SPT brake for it, it'll be a tack driver. Definitely look into the 10 FCP-SR. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170323/74e0b5f9ef3f16df8703a7f96bcb29d0.jpg

Oh, and if you thread it for a brake, look into SPT. Their design gained 20fps over an A2 birdcage on their 10" M4 they built. Lord knows what it'd do to a 308 and twice the barrel.

Definitely putting on a brake and a can if the hearing protection act ever gets out of committee.

Again, and no this isn't a pitch for them. Look onto SPT. Best brake and suppressors I've found so far. They're doing with 2 baffles that SilencerCo and other big names do with 4. And it's all stainless. That means you can use Hoppes (it eats raw aluminum).

Not familiar with SPT and my googler skills didn't help much. What should I search for?

Maryville, Tennessee.

I have a video of their HuDu AR brake on Youtube. Full auto rated, although my rifle isn't. They have a meeting with the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines later this month. Their brake is grabbing attention from a LOT of people. Blacksword Tactical in Knoxville, TN has a pending order of 4k for their ARs. They cannot keep them in stock. Youtube video can be found by searching SPT HuDu. Please excuse my piss poor trigger finger. My fingers don't work as well as they used to.

Last time I checked, 308 brakes were 165+ tax and 308 cans were 495+ tax and ATF BS.

Hard to pick out exactly what your question is. You would really like to have the 6.5, but the 308 you have will suffice since it is so good. But nervous about chopping off the barrel on a shouldered barrel.

Unless you do your own lathe work - good reason to be nervous. If it does not work with the altered barrel harmonics in your attempt to mount a brake - hiring a smith to replace a shouldered barrel will run you about what buying the Savage 10 in 6.5 now. Only experience needed is about the most basic experience of a savage shooter - nut barrels will cost less due to design characteristics and resulting savings on smith and lathe work, right?

While it's nice to see your wife confiscate the 16 LWH - that kind of opens the door to get another LWH. Wish I could, maybe someday they will build it with the bolt on the correct side.

If the Howa is that good, I wouldn't cut it, especially if you're only talking 2 inches. Probably wouldn't hurt anything but why take the chance. Thread it for a brake or can? Sure.

That's what I've decided to do. For the reason you mentioned and the cost compared to the weight savings. Now I just need to find a good gunsmith in Middle TN

I can give you the name of one in East TN. Him and the machinist that owns the shop are the best I've met so far.

Please send it to me. I wouldn't mind the drive if I know they do good work

Do visit them. You'll get to try out their brakes (which you'll most likely buy for every rifle you own, including ARs) and the 260 Dingo. Modified 6.5-06 throwing a 95 grain V-Max at 3975fps.

Andy Welshan is the gunsmith, Norm Griffitts is the master machinist. Well, one of them. DeWayne Payne is the handloading specialist.

If I remember correctly, removal of barrel, threading, and reinstall was 65 plus tax.

That seems to me like a very fair rate for the job.

Fair is an understatement. That's not just chuck it on a lathe and cut threads. They take the word PRECISION seriously. They center your barrel on the lands, not the OD of your barrel. For 65 bucks, I'm amazed they're making money. Then again, 1600 for the Dingo isn't exactly cheap....

Called them Friday and they said $85 which I said was outrageous:) Going to ship them the barreled action since it'll only be around $20 round trip. I was going to go with the Fat Bastard II brake but assuming they make a .308 brake I'll take a look at that.

The Fat Bastard is good for one thing. Pissing off the people next to you. Have one for a 300 Ultra. Not for the recoil, for when some a**hole is unleashing his AR at the benchrest range and is spraying me with brass.

Ha! That's funny. I like the 2nd gen since I can take it off and on at will. I had a Savage Scout and didn't understand the $hi##y looks I would get until I was next to a guy with a LRP and brake and he was blowing my doors off. I'd keep it off at the range and put it back on when hunting.
