Are the threads on the barrel and nut 1 inch 20 tpi UNEF standard on the standard (not magnum) barrel?
Any tips and tricks on chasing the threads?

I have cleaned up threads on a barrel with a 3 corner file. Go slow and fit it into the action as You go.

Usually the problem is with the Receiver threads that can be cleaned up with a receiver tap...

I have also done what FW Conch suggests.

Thanks oldday, FW Conch and Zero333 for the replies and suggestions.
At $115(!) for the tap and $170(!!) for the die, I think I'm going to explore some other alternatives first.

Ouch, sounds like somebody forgot the front base screw. :redface-new:

You might be able to rent what you need.
I needed one years ago and was able to get a loaner.

I was working on a Savage Stealth last year. Although I like the design of the rifle, the fit and finish of the action was a bit rough. The barrel threads were quite rough. I went over the threads lightly with a piece of #320 grit sandpaper. I then took some Mothers Chrome & Mag polish put it on the threads and screwed the barrel nut on and off a few times. Finally cleaning the threads (on the Barrel & nut) with a solvent, then a little grease. Surprising how much smoother the barrel nut went on. (Also did the same thing on the threaded muzzle end.)

Might want to look into a set of thread files? They are excellent at dressing external threads. An ebay search will give lots of choices

Thanks Keith A. and racer55 I have some #320 and Mothers on hand. I'll probably finish up with those.
I'm picking up a thread repair tool from Ace tomorrow that has 20TPI teeth on it. I don't think the thread is buggered up enough to require re-tapping, just some burrs that I'd like to clean up.

Nah not accusing, simply speculating since several of us here may or may not have been guilty of boogering threads in this fashion.....once.

One of those lessons not forgotten :black_eyed:
