need a new 223 die set

after a few years loading the 223, i notice that when i fs the 223 case with the regular 223 fs die, i get too much run out, so i want to get a new 223 die set with better tolerances to hold a tighter run out, was looking at the lyman set with the carbide ball expander, anyne using this set and how is the runout, or any other better choices, i already have a neck sizer, so i dont need a die set with a neck sizer.

First go to a speech therapist to cure your peach inspeadiment caused by drian bramage.

Next buy a Forster benchrest full length die with the high mounted floating expander.

The only suggestion I have is to not dismiss the Lee die set or the Lee full length sizer which might very well pleasantly surprise you at a lot less cost.

I just received a new loading setup and the dies with it. When looking through some comments doing research, the Lee is quite popular, and in particular, the crimping die is well reviewed if you crimp your cases.

If you full length resize a case without the expander this case will be as concentric as it ever will be.

The main cause of case neck runout is because the expander is locked down off center.

This is why the Forster high mounted floating expander works so well, the die holds the case neck centered in the die when the expander enters the case neck. Meaning the expander can not pull the case neck off center.

Below I installed a Forster expander and spindle assembly on my RCBS .223 full length die. The RCBS expander is raised as high as it will go and the Forster unit on the right is adjusted properly. And by installing Forster expanders on all my RCBS dies the neck runout was greatly reduced.

My Lee neck sizer die produces less than .001 run out. Must have got a good one!

I shoot a bolt gun, and have never full length sized my 223 brass. I have 12 plus cycles on a batch of Winchester brass, and I think I've had to trim it once and it all measures less than .001 runout.

The expander ball is typically the culprit, and especially if not lubing the INSIDE of the neck well enough. If you are using anything more than light force when withdrawing the expander ball through the neck, you are probably pulling the neck shoulder forward and off center. I was able to measure this while trouble shooting a friends die set.

Neck size only, or get a RCBS, Redding, Forster, competition die with neck bushing if you need to FL size. Or as Big Ed wrote, get the high mounted expander ball.

At the Whidden custom die website they tell you they get the most concentric cases with non-bushing full length die.

A non bushing neck sizing die does not fully support the case body, and with a bushing die any time you reduce neck diameter .004 or more it can induce neck runout.

If you remove a full length dies expander, after sizing the case will be as concentric as it ever will be. The main problem is if the expander is not centered in the die and then pulls the neck off center.

Below my Redding .243 die has been equipped with a Forster high mounted floating expander and now it produces far less neck runout than the much longer Redding expander.

I prefer my Forster full length dies and my RCBS or Redding FL dies equipped with a Forster expander than any other type die I own.
