Dang, are you writing a book or starting your own show Gene? I am retired, I could go sit in the bars or casino's with other retirees I know, or play with my collection, which IMO is more fun and and leaves more to show for the time & money spent!

Here's one I did for another forum that might be of interest here combined with a related post from here, I put the newer information in where it is applicable -

I got a 1915 that consisted of a slide, frame, breech block, one grip and a bag of parts. Here is the way I got it with the parts dumped out of the bag -

I thought since it was already in parts it would be a good time to take some pictures showing the assembly process (I would never take one apart this far if I didn't have to, and I cannot think of any reason to ever have to!) I also tried some video's but they all are very dark, if you have a way to adjust the brightness it would help, also they were all taken with the camera on a tripod just under my chin so sometime not everything is in the frame or in focus.

I had two parts I could not place, a small spring and and a part I knew didn't belong, I am fairly sure it's the locking arm for a Climin' Lyman receiver sight but the small set screw heads are really damaged so I don't know it it's usable.

After double checking the parts list I found that there were two more small springs used on the 1915 that go in the breech block, I at first assumed they were there because the block was together, looking at it closer I saw signs on the pins that suggest the block also had been disassembled and noticed the sear spring was missing. Working the action slow allows gravity to make the sear work but I don't think it would hold if fired, so it might go full auto if left that way -

I tried a couple times to remove the sear, it appears it should easily come out if the firing pin is removed first, that should allow the rear to tilt down more which should let it slip right out, but I didn't see that until I had removed it another way. I smoothed up the edges of the breech block around the sear with a very small file and gained enough clearance so it snapped out by tapping on it, probably not a good way to do it, I was afraid I might bend or break the sear, if I ever did it again I would remove the firing pin, I think I am lucky I didn't break it.

INTERMISSION


After getting the sear out I found the the 'extra' spring was to big to fit.

I had the most problems with the spring for the grip safety, it is very hard to get lined up to insert the pin. Yep, done a sear spring install once myself, don't recommend it but after a couple tries you get the hang of it.

About the only thing I found easy was the slide release only used on the 1915, it just drops into place.

You've done a very nice job putting this together, well done!

I wish you were close by I've got a 1915 .380 which is in pretty nice shape but the backstrap safety is not functioning. The fellow I purchase the gun from it provided a picture of the gun unassembled and then the final assembly pictures, I don't think he had a lot of Competency with guns he got it back together but the safety is not functioning properly, I don't know if he left something unhooked or left a part out when he reassembled. Attaching a picture, as you can see the backstrap safety appears to be pushed out a bit, you can mash it and it Springs back and forth okay but it's like it's not engaging.

There is a pin on a sliding bar for the grip safety that has to be in an angled slot in the backstrap - the back strap on yours might be back of that part. It shows in this picture looking inside the grip -

Thank you for that information! As far as removing the grip panels I know they can be very brittle and break easily, any tips you might be able to offer there regarding removal?

For grip removal I have been told that they can be CAREFULLY warmed up using a hairdryer which will help, also when pushing out on them from inside the magazine well make sure you support them on the outside to minimize the chance of bending them to far. I have broken one during an attempted removal, but I was not supporting it on the out side (and didn't warm it up either).

Reading your post again I am now thinking it's possible you are missing the sliding bar that the grip safety is supposed to activate, your picture has the manual safety in the fire position which covers the slot the bar is in so I cannot tell from your photo.

Another issue - when I answered your question yesterday all the photo's I posted through PHOTOBUCKET displayed - tonight they all are blocked again - I don't know what's going on, I assume you must have seen the photos too, do they still display for you?

I'm hoping the bar is there just not engaged, if it's missing it may be impossible to find one.

Regarding pushing from the inside of the magazine well you would push from the back edge where the panel tab snaps into the frame. I believe when reinstalling them they slide in the frame grooves and then snap in to place, so the removal function would be reversed.

Hi Sav22,

I know this is an old thread, but I was wondering if these videos were uploaded to YouTube or exist somewhere else. I clicked the links and they are no longer active.

I recently purchased a Savage 1907 at auction and it appears that the firing pin spring has "jumped" the firing pin retainer. I want to disassemble the breech plug to fix it.

Please let me know if these videos are still available.

Alex, I do not have the video's available anywhere else, it's unfortunate what photobucket did, I have contacted them a couple times explaining I do not make any money off the pictures and feel it is not right to ask me to now pay out money for the use of old pictures that were uploaded for non commercial use when the site was promoted as free. It has to cost them more to blur the pictures and add their watermark then to just display them. They are using my pictures to promote their site and I think they should be paying me a fee for that advertisement.
