Gents , I have a 116 in .300 win.mag. My understanding is it has 1 in 10 twist . The chamber has a long throat , so loads that will fit in the mag. are well back from the lands.(I dont have the numbers with me now). Has anyone had success with loads well back from the lands or will my most accurate loads likely be too long to fit in the magazine ? Any info. will be appreciated , as I'm trying to come up with an elk load (maybe 200gr, accubond or barnes lrx ) thanks , scott

You'll be OK.

My deer hunting 300winmag load is with 130gr TTSX @ 3,550 fps, and they're jumping around .220" !

It's the most accurate load in that rifle.

I'm hoping to find a 1 MOA load that will fit in the magazine .

From experience I can tell you that it's the recoil that opens up the groups.

I would go with the 200 accubond for elk. H-4831 has always been a very accurate powder in my 300winmags.

If you're using F.C. brass, I recommend working up a load around 70 - 72 gr of H-4831 with 215 / 215m primers. I never had any luck with CCI-250 primers, So anything but CCI-primers should work best.

With R.P. brass, probably 69 - 70.5 gr will be around the sweet spot with H-4831 and the 200 gr AB.

Winchester brass around 71 - 72.5 gr

3.450" to 3.480" OAL is good to fit in the 3.500" magazine.

There is a big discrepancy in H20 capacity between different 300winmag Headstamps, hence the different charge weights, which are close to max.

man thats a frekin laser! how does the bullet hold up at those velocities on deer? I used that same bullet in my 300wm but loaded just under 3k with h4895. never got to try it on game though.

My Bear Hunter is sub MOA with Factory Winchester Power Points that I basically bought for the brass. I plan on loading it with either 215 Bergers or that slightly lighter Hornady ELX. I understand the ELX are a little more forgiving but those 215 Bergers are fantastic out of a 300 win mag.

I have heard great things with the 215 berger over H1000, lit by a 215m. there was a very long thread longrangehunter where one guys rifle (he loaned it alot while guiding) who made kills from i want to say around 250 yds to 1200yds on game from antelope to elk with great results. something crazy like 50 kills with that one load and rifle.

I've only got that bullet through 2 deer at close range (about 50 and 75 yards) and it goes in and out never to be seen again. A lot of the ground I hunt I'm lucky to get a shot over 100 yards unless I go by power lines, so I chose I bullet that will not be overkill and would hold up with out worries. I think the hydrostatic shock does the killing with this bullet at close range. The deer just folded where they stood.
But I would rather not use this bullet at a 300 yard shot because I'm not very confident it will shock the deer's nervous system. For longer range I like Sierra BTSP, Berger VLD, Hornady Interlock BTSP and the like.

thats interesting. I figured with that kind of speed you did it for the flat trajectory at distance. with an impact velocity like that you didn't lose like half the deer?

Nope, no meet loss. Less meet loss than with traditional bullets.

Remember the TTSX is a monolithic bullet and doesn't come apart like cup n core bullets.

Yes the trajectory is very flat, First year using this load I had it sighted 1.5" high at 109 yards (100meters) and it hits like 3.5" low at 328 yards (300meters). Now I just have a 100 meter zero because of the terrain I'm hunting it's all I need.
