So I have my barrel set up and some 458 300 gr tipped barnes bullets coming.

These open fast and are designed for the 458 socom lower speeds.
t any rate I want to load them toat about 2000-2200 for a reduced load.

I contacted Barnes and they said to load them over H4895.

H4895 will fill the case, but only 80% burn so a huge fireball.

Still waiting to hear back from Hodgdon.

Anybody shooting 300 gr reduced loads out of a 458 winmag ??

Look at 45-70 loads designed for trapdoor rifles - if you use powders on the fast to medium end of the scale you will be fine (5744, 4198, 3031, 4895, etc.)

I would start at 60 grains of 3031 and go up from there.

My pet reduced load for the 458 Win is 70 grains of 3031 and a 300 grain cast lead bullet at 2200+fps. I have not had a reason to ever use a different powder. Clean burn-good velocity.
I use the same powder with the 458 Lott and 350 grain Barnes as well.

I use 51 gr of 4198 in my Marlin 1895 with 300 gr and it shoots great and no sign of pressure

Not sure how reduced I would call these.
I am loading 340gr and 500gr cast from wheel weights in LEE molds, I am using 64 grains of IMR3031.
I am not sure of the speed of these, but with my bum shoulder they kick pretty darn good.
I am going to be looking into some loads using either Unique or SR4759 for practice loads.

Is there any other software like quickload but FREE or super cheap?

Not that I know of but PM me what you want to do and I will run it.

H4895... fill the case and then scale the powder used to fill the case. put 60% back in the case.

AA XMR5744 ... Same thing, But you can use 40% fill

you will probable still see fire balls

H4198 59.0gr with a 300gr bullet should land in the high 2100/2200 fps range

My version of QL with a 300 gr TTSX over 52 gr of H4198 gets me 2140 fps.
The issue is that is about an 80% fill so I am not sure about that fill with that powder.

I emailed Hogdon but no response yet.

Just saw the post but anyway this is what I found from Hodgdon and what i used for my 458 when I got started but then I switched to H4198. I never got the speed of any of my load but they are loaded to near max or what listed.

"Reduced Loads H4895

INTRODUCTION TO YOUTH HUNTING, INFORMAL TARGET AND PLINKING LOADS
Hodgdon Powder Company has developed the following reduced loads for youth and beginning shooters for use on deer and similarly sized game animals. The bullets chosen were originally designed for single shot pistols and their lower velocities. These loads have been developed to closely approximate those pistol velocities in rifles, and therefore, similar performance on game animals. This provides our young and beginning shooters with loads effective to 200 yards with minimal recoil.
For all cartridges we chose H4895 because it is the slowest burning propellant that ignites uniformly at reduced charges. For years, H4895 has been the top choice by cast bullet shooters. For this type shooting, loads are reduced even more than the hunting loads listed herein. To create loads of this type for target and plinking, we recommend our 60% rule with H4895. By taking the maximum charges listed in our Annual Manual with any given cartridge and multiplying it by 60%, the shooter can create a 1500 to 2100 fps load, depending on the bullet weight shown. This works only where H4895 is listed. Do not use H4895 in a cartridge where it has not been shown.
Call Hodgdon Powder Company if additional information is needed. Loads may be adjusted up or down to achieve best accuracy. Do not reduce by more than an additional 10%.
WARNING!
For all brands of powders use only the components shown. If you make any changes in components or get new lot numbers, you should begin again with the starting loads and work up to maximum cautiously.
For those loads listed where a starting load is not shown, start 10% below the suggested maximum load and then approach maximums carefully, watching for any sign of pressure (difficult extraction, cratered and flattened or blown primers, and unusual recoil).
NEVER Exceed the Loads Listed in This Publication."

I use H4895 for every reduced load I shoot, but in this case I did not want to reduce it so much.
I wanted to just get the recoil to a more tolerable level.

I ended up loading 56 gr of RL7 and that is about a 94% fill at my OAL.
Should be about 2300-2400 fps.

I will probably eventually run it up to 2500, but even this speed is fine for what I want.
This is a 458 socom bullet so it was designed for lower opening speeds, but even if it does lose a peddle or two
it will still hit a hog like the hammer of thor.

The rifle setup is a long action control feed in a Duromax stock and a 21" barrel, 1-4 x leupold scope
I had 2 mercury recoil reducers in the butt stock at the range.
Weighs 10# on the nose.

I was shooting it next to my 308 with a 19" barrel that is also in a duromax stock and it weighs 8# even. I was shooting 208 gr amaxes
at 2500 and 220 gr prohunters at 2400-2450 and there was not a lot of difference in the recoil between it and the 458WM with this load.

I am going hunting in a few days and going to mount it in a tupperware stock to trim some weight.
I will chrono the load then too.

Here is a pic of the scud.

If your going to use H4895 then wait till it snows so you can see how much powder didn't burn on the ground. ::)
300 grain bullet - Trail Boss 19 grains 1187 fps 10,800 cup - 23 grains 1282 fps 13,200 cup

That is exactly why I did not use H4895.

I was looking for something that would return around 2200 fps but wanted to use a powder that would mostly be consumed in the barrel.

I found a few reduced 300 gr loads on loaddata using RL7 that were running really slow.
I am not a paid subscriber so I could not see the charge, but QL said it would have been maybe a 70% fill ??

Figured at 94% fill I should not have any problems so I loaded them up.
I think its running at 45k or there abouts.

Its actually a nice shooting load at 56 gr of RL7.

Speer #14 lists a 400 grain FNSP over 26 to 30 grains of IMR SR4759 with magnum primers = 1262ft/sec to 1445 ft/sec respectively

Lyman#49 lists two reduced loads for the 500 grain RN
SR-4759 30grains=1216ft/sec=18kcup to 34.5grains=1384ft/sec=25.2kcup
XMP-5744 34grains=1212ft/sec=16kcup to 39.5grains=1380ft/sec=22.1kcup

I think a good reference on reduced loads is the one for 292grain #2 Lead Alloy from Lyman #49

POWDER CHARGE IN GRAINS ft/sec
SR4759 32 to 36.5 1499/1762
IMR-4227 44.5 to 50.5 2100/2305
XMP-5744 37 to 42.5 1530/1744
IMR-4198 54 to 58 2135/2205
IMR-3031 60 to 69 1885/2220 *Listed as most Accurate*
IMR4064 64 to 72 1865/2110
Unique 19 to 23 1460/1625
2400 28 to 33 1585/1765

They do not list the cup for these loads.

Hope this helps!

I will keep those 400 gr loads in mind.
That would make a good brush load and the Remington 405 gr bullet is cheap.

The 4 powders I use almost exclusively for rifle are H4895, RL17, RL10x, RL7 so I was trying
to keep my load within those 4 powders.
I just don't like having a million different powders sitting around any more.

Reason that I was trying to hit 2200-2400 or so was more for trajectory. Its pretty common for me to step out onto a field or
drive around a corner of a field scouting for hogs and there they are.
A lot of times from 100-200 yards.

With this bullet at 2300-2400 fps, I have the rifle zeroed at 150 yards, its 1.5" high at 100 yards and 4.5" low at 200 yards.

I prefer cartridges that will instigate some piggie gymnastics.

Why shoot an ordinary cartridge like a 308 or the like and watch them run off.
I would rather shoot them once and at least get a good back flip or a squealing slide.

So far I got the best action out of the 375 ruger shooting them on the run.

This should one up it.

There is a picture around somewhere, in Texas I think with a Jeep or something similar with 2 machine guns and a 50 BMG sniper rifle mounted on board.
I will look around and see if I can find it.

After I saw that youtube of the 577 trex, I don't want to have anything to do with any guns named after a dinosaurs.

While bull PD's need all the power you can muster, for pigs the key is fast follow up shots -
