I though I had a pretty good grasp on this until I tried to put it into action today. My ballistic calc's (JBMballistics.com) say at 300 yards the bullet is dropping 16" and the mils is 1.5. So I'm thinking I should dial up 1.5 mils and I should be on target assuming all my data is correct. Does this sound right?

Rifle is an 18" bbl 223. Scope is a Vortex Viper PST 4-16 Mil/Mil. 75gn Hornady BTHP sitting 0.010 off the lands on top of 24.2 grains of BLC-2. 75 degree day at sea level.

Yes, that is correct...

1 MIL = 3.6" @ 100yds
1 MIL = 7.2" @ 200yds
1 MIL = 10.8" @ 300yds

16" drop / 10.8" per MIL = 1.48 MILs or 1.5 MIL drop.

Best part of Mil/Mil (or moa/moa) and FFP glass, is how easy it is to adjust from a sighter. Just measure with the reticle the amount of mils the impact is from the point of aim and dial !
As long as you know where the first shot hit, you will always hit the bull on the second shot after milling the first one. No more guessing !

This.

Stop worrying about the inches.

Yep. Inches don't matter if using Mils. How many MILS you are off in the scope is all that matters.
