Start load development today with my new rifle.

Savage 111
Criterion 24" 1-8 twist
Boyds Pro Varmint
Viper HSLR 4-16x44

140 vld .020 from the lands
New Lapua brass
CCI-200
H4831sc started at 43 grains and worked up to 45 grains with no pressure

The target is at 100 yards of 44 grains, measured .611. The bullet on the left was my third bullet. Next time out I will probably load 45.3, 45.6, and 45.9 and see what I get, and then play with the length after that.

Wjarrel,

what kind of velocities are you getting with those first loads?

I've got the exact same barrel on the way except mine is 25".... Really like to know/see what you get out of it....

I haven't shot it through the chrono yet, probably in acouple weeks. I will report back tho when I do.

that'd be awesome!!! I've been hoping to get myself to at least the 2800 FPS area, using the 140s (143 ELD-X preferably)... On another thread a guy claimed to be getting 2800 FPS out a 22" barrel using the 140s... But curious to see what you get...

Cheers,

Looks like you are off to a good start. Chances are you will be gaining speed for 50-100 rounds so your chrono numbers probably wouldn't be the best data anyway.

Unless you are throated long, much more than 45g is going to be compressed. I load mine to almost 3" coal, 28" bartlein and 45.6g 4831sc gives me a very steady 2850 fps. I have run it up to 46.3, groups opened up on me and anything over 46 was starting to flatten primers. I didn't have any groups good enough at those charges so I didn't even chrono them.

Criterion uses a .298 neck and a .160 freebore on their 260 Remington Match reamer.

With the 142 SMK my CBI 260 Rem Match was 2.925 OAL to the lands... It has grown 0.038 over the course of 1600 rounds and is now 2.963"... I just ran some H4831sc in mine last couple of weeks and it liked 45.8 grains but it's a 28" barrel...

Good luck with it.. Josh over at CBI is stand up guy.

What is your load and components?

My pet load is

142 SMK
41.8 grains of H4350
CCI BR2
Lapua Brass

My rifle isn't super sensitive to jump... It shoots best around .o25 jump so I usually load at .020 Jump and chase the lands again when that load is at .030 jump. I am trying H4831sc since it is more readily available and because I have another rifle that I plan to use it for. Powder consolidation is my friend!!!

^ I run same as cowtownup. Only 42.5 gr H4350 and .010 off lands. CBI Match 260- 26". 2835 fps

Your smk's like to be seated close! Mine are .025 off, things went haywire when I was that close. Not much change from .025-.035 but I settled on the longer length.

+1 for the powder consolidation. I have 2 rifles (260 25-06 (tel:260 25-06)) that shoot h4831sc very well, and a .300 wm I am hoping likes it too.

Ive learned rather quickly that the vlds have to be seating close to the lands. I've found that .003 off the lands proved to be extremely accurate.

I went with berger hyrbid 140g with my 260. I'm getting ~2700fps using 45.2g of H4831sc. I feed from a AI setup, so I can't get as much jump as I would like. However, this load is great out to 1000 yards. I have tested it farther, that is the longest range I have access to. For getting the velocities, I use the Magnetospeed V3 chronograph.

5 shots of 45.4 grains, I'll load 10 more this weekend and put them through the chrono.http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l588/wjarrell1/IMG_0601_zpssexl2vxv.jpg (http://s1125.photobucket.com/user/wjarrell1/media/IMG_0601_zpssexl2vxv.jpg.html)

Vlds need to be real close to the lands. When I used vlds I had mine at .003 from the lands.
