Cowtown,

How was your grouping with the R-17 is actually what I was wondering. I've heard the you can get the velocity increase with the R-17 but it's not as accurate and the H4350 or H4831SC.

just wondered what results you experienced. I understand about wanting to keep the round count down.... Hummers are hard to come by....

The R-17 didn't group well right off the bat so I didn't chase it at all. I may have shot 10 rounds total using it..

That has been the story I've heard from most guys who have shot it. I'd rather have the accuracy then the Velocity, but If I can get both then I'm in heaven.... Thanks Cowtown!! Sorry for bugging you so much on this thread.

Cheers,

No problem... Glad I could help...

Well now I know I can eliminate that one most likely.

that leaves me with:

H4350
H4831SC
Reloader 19

let the load development begin.... O Snap!! That's right, I still got 10 weeks to wait for the barrel to show up.... This is killing me!!

Why not look at Reloder 16? I had some in my cart last Widener's order but took it out for Reloder 23 and two jugs of AR Comp. Straight from Alliants info page states it as comparable to 4350.

I love Re17 for my 338-06 but my hunting loads are not summer time loads by any means. Temp swings affect 17 quite a bit pressure wise. Temp swings in Maine are 80s during the summer, 20-40 degrees come hunting season.

Hmm...very interesting imr 4451
So how is the krieger doing Vs Shilen

IMR 4451 is within .3grs +/- velocity wise of H4350. I've burned up around 6lbs of it so far and don't have any complaints at this point. I'm running it in my 6 Creedmoor with 115DTACs and it shoots the same as H4350 with proper load work up as far as I can tell.

Gawd D@mm!t! Stop telling everyone on the internet the secret! Hodgden comes out with a good substitute for H4350 and those of us who found it are keeping our mouths shut so we can continue to find it when we need it, and here you are being Mr. Blabbermouth. You should know I've shot people for less. haha :p

I know MZ5 burns a lot of RL-17, and grouped very nicely when I was in AZ over Crimmas. Can't recall if it is his actual load, or just done for testing; but on the Pressure Trace it was slightly more consistent than H4350. I bought a mid-sized mountain of URP from Bruno on a closeout deal while down there. So far with the RDF's it is doing quite well in the winter weather.

Maybe a stupid question - while H4350 is nowhere to be found - IMR4350 is available, at least where I live. Is there a reason the IMR4350 is not being considered? Is the IMR temperature sensitive?

In 2008, when I built My 260Rem, I couldn't get "H", so I went with "IMR". I started with the only load that Hodgdon lists, 43grns, (140grn) and that is all I have ever needed. I have not detected any temperature sensitivity. But, when doing load work up in the summer, I keep my loads in a cooler, because the end use is for the fall and winter.

The only powder that I have detected temp sensitivity is RL 17. But I have worked up a Winter load and a Summer load for it, and that takes care of that.

IMO, this temp sensitivity thing is the result of advertising hype, and has lead to way too much OCD on the subject :-((

As can be seen by other threads on here, there are plenty of substitutes for H4350 :-))

Yeah, on the temp sensitivity thing. I was doing fine before it became a discussion issue. It's still pretty much just a discussion issue for me. While temperature varies widely where I live - I fish in the hot weather, so that negates one extreme.

Plenty right down the street. They are proud of it though. But no hazmat fee!

I wish I would have known about this store before I placed my last order. They seem to have everything you can't find, powder, primers, all the good stuff.

Yep they had my BR4's too. Just don't stock berger bullets.

I have had loads that were good in cold and suddenl wild when it warmed up.

Not sure if it was on the edge of a node or the shooter was garmented up and had better free recoil.

FW Conch:
I would be interested in what the variation is. I like it and shoot a lot of it in 308 and 30-06.

"And ammo temp will make a huge difference in MV, and drop at long ranges, especially if you let a cartridge sit in a hot chamber while you are getting ready to take a shot. A 20* rise change in temp will put you around around mil high at 1000."

20 degree temp change won't move impact a mil at 1000. Look at the temps below for changes per degree. The most is 1.71 per degree. Using that and 20 degrees it comes out to about 34 degree change. Running my data on JBM, which I know is good, my load at 2895fps with the 140 AMAX is 7.9 mils at 50 degrees at 1000 yards. When I go up to 100 degrees it changes it to 7.6 mils. I have shot the H4350 loads from the teens to over 100 degrees with minimal chrono'd data shift. Might be a tenth or two at 1000. That is from the ammo being in those conditions. Granted that is with H4350 and not the new powders being used but even if they were more there still wouldn't be a full mil shift.
