I am brand new to this forum , spent hours trying to research my model 1899 .303 model # 72.221 and am still confused .... OK .... here's what I have so far... It has a 20 inch barrel and is a saddle carbine with the staple on the left side of the receiver as you are holding the gun, 21b rear sight a knife edge front sight ,carbine butt stock and a Schnabel front. I received a letter from savage historical services that informed me that that I have a 1899-c that was built in 1906 .. the information I've seen tells me it should be an 1899-f any help would be appreciated .

You've got an 1899F.

So did you get the letter from Savage Arms, I guess they're up and running?

John Calahan wouldn't have made a #$%^ up like that so whoever is doing the letters at Savage needs a pee pee slap. I'd send the letter back with a picture of your gun and tell them to do it right this time. I've seen a couple guns that were rebarreled but you can't turn a half octagon 26" barrel into a saddle ring carbine, someone really screwed up your letter.

thanks.. that was my best guess as well.. I will send the letter back and see what happens next... yes savage has the records that John Callahan left.. letters go to Savage Arms attn. historical services 100 Springdale road Westfield , Ma 01085.. I think the cost is the same as before . $35 for the 1895, 1899, 99 s..

Mad Dog is da MAN ! He knows his stuff!! There probably aren't many people working at Savage these days that even know what a 99 is!! When I bought my 99 take in .30-30 from my local LGS, (run by a really nice young couple) they had never even seen a 99 before!

And we'd love to see pictures of your heirloom!!

I would have to take out two loans on my house to buy the records off John, I heard Savage paid a premium to get them back.

This is my 1899F in 25-35.

Very nice.. it looks just like mine. . mine has checkering on the stocks and I do not have the strap on the ring .. other than that .... I hope John charged them a bunch after all the work he did.....

Checkering?

Never seen a SRC checkered, I'm thinking it's aftermarket.

Your name is interesting, are you Canadian?

We definitely need pictures! This sounds like a jewel of a 99!
