Just picked up a 300 win mag 116 ss for 1k target and long range hunting.

What barrel length/twist for the higher bc 200+ grn bullets at long range? Thinking 26-30" with a 1:10 twist. If so how light of a bullet will this stabalize?

Powders?

To neck size or full length size?

Any and all other information welcome, Matt.

A fast twist will stabilize any lighter bullet.

I personally dont think you can over stabilize a bullet.

You can over spin them to a point where they explode, but you can slow them down a tad and that works.

Powder depends on the bullet weight.

I like the reloader powders.
Probably reloader 22 for 200 gr bullets.

H4895 and H4350 are both good powders.
H4895 for light bullets but H4895 is too fast for the 300 win mag with heavier bullets, although it might be okay for some reduced loads.
H4350 or IMR 4350 is a good powder for heavier bullets, in the 160-200 gr area.
Use even slower powder for heavier bullets.

Probably best to go to the Hodgdon and Alliant web sites and look at the recommended load data.

Thanks for the reply. Do you neck or full length size?

Matt:

I'm contemplating the same build for a long action Remington I have. I think your 1:10" twist will stabilize the heavier bullets just fine. I have a 1:10 twist on my BVSS...to stabilize 185 gr. Berger Target/ hunting bullets. It's been many years since I've had a 300 WM....but used Reloader powders when I did. I'm not sure how light you can go with that twist...the .308 doesn't group nearly as well if I drop below 165....this might be because the bullets are going too fast as was suggested by Tammons.

Here's a listing of some heavier bullets and recommended twist rates from Berger's site:

30 cal 190 Grain Match Target VLD 0.308 190 0.570 0.291 12(twist) 30414
30 cal 210 Grain Match Target BT Long Range 0.308 210 0.626 0.320 11(twist) 30419
30 cal 210 Grain Match Target VLD 0.308 210 0.631 0.323 11(twist) 30415

Good Luck....Post some results when you get the project completed,

Take Care,

Wayne

When I shot 165's in my .300 RUM they were all over the place. From 180's up to 240's out of a 1-10 twist they were all good. From 1000- 1800 yards.

Thanks for the relies just ordered a Shilen 26" SS with the 1:10 twist.

Will be looking at 208grn A-Maxs to start.

How many neck size, how many full length and why?
