Have a line on an older Savage in 300 win mag. Owner says it is a model 16, ss with a wood stock. He has given me the seriel number which I pm'd to maddog and am waiting to hear back from him.

Seriel number is F309599.

Would like to use the acion to build a long-rang target/hunting rifle. Will use an aftermarket barrel and prob a SSS trigger.

Is there anything in particular to be watching out for, pros, cons?

Surmise from the serial number prefix it has the flat top rear receiver. Believe it uses a large shank barrel as ones I've looked at in that chambering are so equiped. Probable when you change the bolt head it will be a large firing pin setup. Probably will have the older Savage three screw adjustable trigger. Stagger feed box magazine setup for the long magnum cartridges.

Great information thanks.

Is there any benefit to the flat/round receiver?

If I am keeping it a 300 win mag do I need to change the bolt face?

How do these actions do accuracy wise?

Thanks again, Matt.

Isn't a model 16 a short action?

300 Win Mag?????

Model 116 never came with wood stocks, always synthetic, hence the name "Weather Warrior". Of course there are always exceptions...I have one in an American classic stock that I built during my tour of the factory.
It is a standard shank barrel, the only magnums with a large shank are the WSM's and RUM's.

Thanks for the replies. It is in fact a 116, the owner jus missed a 1. It is ss and has what appears to be a factory wood stock. It's in good shape and the price was right so I bought it.
