Longer range model 12 22-250

Building the 22-250 for the long range dogs. 300-650 yards. Currently loading 55gr nbt. Whats another bullets that would perform well at that range. 60gr nbt? Needs some input. And no I don't want to shoot a 243.already played that game lol

I would think something in the 70gr range, BUT I am not a long range shooter, so it will be interesting to see what those that do, recommend.

I mean if I can make a 4-5" group around 600 yards. That's good enough for me! Just need a bullets that will break a shoulder down at that far

First it depends on your rifle twist, the bullets will do Prairie dogs (I don't know what a nbt is other than a boat tail? Nosler?)

If your guns does not like that bullet then a different mfg if its not working.

Hornady indicates 50 gr are good for that application, you are not shooting deer and their varmint bullets (or any mfg) will do the job.

Its the gun, shooter and how accurate a load that is relevant.

I would suggest you get a Hornady or Sierra book and preferably both.

I shoot my 22-250 almost exclusively at prairie dogs. I built it with a 300-500 yard working range in mind. I'm shooting primarily the 50 gr Vmax, but also the 50 gr Ballistic Tip. Performance has been very good for me with either of those bullets, even out to 600 yards (taken a few longer pokes on a calm wind day). One of the things I like about both bullets, other than their terminal performance and break up on impact (important on a flat prairie dog field), is that they are both available in 250 (the Vmax can also be found in 500) count boxes. That is a big deal to me, as I can shoot 400-500 rounds over a weekend (per gun) over some "good" dog towns. But my criteria is accuracy, terminal performance (including breakup on impact-so less risk of ricochets), and a nice cost break in the big count boxes.

I have shot a few 'yotes with this combo, but more targets of opportunity than a dedicated 'yote rig. Sometimes they come in to the dog towns to pick up the dead ones for an "easy meal". I've not had to hit one twice with that load.

I have other rigs built up for "nearer" and "far-er" shooting, but my 22-250 has been a solid performing "mid range" gun. Mild recoil, moderate to average report, no muzzle brake needed to see your own hits in scope, relatively inexpensive to load for, and brass life has been good (I neck size only until the bolt no longer closes, then set the shoulder back again, which helps greatly).

My load is 40.0 grs of H-380, Fed match primer, Rem brass, neck sized only, either the Nosler BT or Hornady Vmax, either one in 50 gr weight, seated just off the lands. Shooting a McGowen bbl with a 9 twist. Scope is a Nikon 6-18x in 0 MOA mounts.

I have a 1:12 twist. Savage model 12. New trigger, new bell and Carlson stock then either a vortex or nightforce will be on top. Currently loading 55gr nosler ballistic tips. But if I can I'll load 60gr nosler ballistic tips. But also was wondering how well the hornady 52gr match would perform on a coyotes shoulder at 500.. wanting a solid bullet that would bust up a dogs shoulder at that far. This is a coyote rifle only

If u want to kill coyotes at 500 plus yards need to change barrel for fast twist to launch the heavies to be affective at that range.

With a 1 in 12 twist, you're probably limited to a 55 grain bullet. You'll probably need a 9 twist at the minimum to shoot the 60's.

You might try the 53 grain V-Max for longer range with the 12 twist. It has a pretty good BC and works well with that barrel. I changed out my barrel and put an 8 twist 28 inch X-caliper and am shooting the 80 grain SMK with good success.

The Berger 60g and 64g flat base varmint bullet will shoot well out of the 12 twist.

I had a factory LRPV 12tw 22-250 that shot the 64 Berger lights out, RL19 about 3400 FPS.

Scott Evans suggestion is a good one. Berger 64 gr FB works good in 12" twist.

Other good bullets are the Sierra 55 gr SBT Gameking (#1365) and the Sierra 55gr Blitz.

I averaged .5MOA (best group .3MOA) 5-shot groups with 55g NBT and 35g of 6064. Savage VLP, 22-250, 12-Twist.

I plan on trying some 70gr nosler rdf's. not sure if they'll spin up with a 12 twist as it's a pretty long bullet, but i'm going to try. they have great bc and if they shoot like their bigger brother 175's they should be pretty explosive on varmints (the 175's break up pretty bad, was hoping to use them as a target/hunting bullet like I did with the amax, definitly a no go)
