Can't figure out how to swap a bolt handle

Have my Savage 11 in 6.5 Creedmoor I am trying to replace a bolt handle on. My problem is, when I pull the bolt out, where I need to put the hex key, there is what I assume to be the back side of the firing pin. During normal operation, when I pull my trigger this piece recedes into the bolt but when I disengage the bolt to remove it it recocks this piece and makes it impossible to get a hex down there. What am I doing wrong?

You need to decock the bolt, push the button on the side to the long slot. You have the new style firing pin, they have a cocked indicator that goes thru the bolt head.
