Savage Model 5 scope mounts

I just acquired a Model 5 that has a Weaver N3 scope mount on it. The N3 is a 1/2" side mount.

Some questions on my scope mount options for this Model 5.

Will a 1" tube clear the bolt handle? (does anyone have a 1" tube scope on their early model bolt action?)

Which Weaver side mounts are there for this model.

I have a Weaver V-22 7/8" tube for it, which weaver mount fits this, or any other brand avaialble?

Reference the Model 3, 4, 5's what are the scope options and scope mounting options for these?

Very nice rifle. I have a model 4 and it shoots very nice.

You asked about scope mounts. I do not know if yours has the mount holes on the side the same as mine. But the Havlins scope mount for the Mossbergs bolts directly onto and is square. It does look a bit funky and you will need to have some mounts that extend back as it sits VERY far forward.

You say you have this scope mount on your model 4, what size of scope is on it, 3/4, 7/8 or 1", and are there any problems with the bolt handle clearing the tube of the scope?

I have a 1" scope. The mount is a weaver style so you can put whatever you want on it.

My bolt handle is shaped differently than yours and it passed barely. Yours being straight I think it might be easier. But I cannot guarantee anything. I wish someone would make a similar rail but mount is a inch or two farther back, the Mossbergs have a shorter receiver.

Here are some photos of the bolt, closed & open.
You can see that the bolt is straight and barely clears the 1/2" older Weaver scope tube on it now.
I'm looking at the Weaver #2 side mount base and 1" ring mount for it. I am bidding on a set now. We will see if I win the bids.

One thing that drove me to buy this old Savage was the feel of the stock as you handle it. Even though it is a 22, the full wood stock makes this feel like a full size center fire rifle. It feels solid.

The mount from havlinsales.com that is for a Mossberg looks promising. I measured the distance on the Savage and it is 1 5/8" center also, like the Mossberg mount.

Went to the Peterson's Gun Shop down the street from me this morning. Bought the Weaver #2 side mount and scope mount that goes on it, 30 bucks out the door. We tried my 1" scope on it and all fit very well with the bolt handle clearing the tube with no problems. I will have to use some longer threaded 10-32 bolts than what I have and counter-sink them for the weaver mount. It uses 8-32 threads for modern firearms. This Savage has 10-32 threads for the side mount. Bought the screws/bolts I need at a hardware store. (2) 10-32 hex head 1/2" bolts. The hex heads are the smallest head I could find. The hex heads will have to fit flush on the #2 base so that the scope mount can fit flat against it.

I'll post photos when I'm done so ya'll can see a 1" scope on this old Savage.

I am not to thrilled with the 2 piece mount. The old Weaver N3 mount used 10-32 bolts. I do not know if this was the factory size or not for the holes. Modern firearms use 8-32, the Weaver #2 mount is D&T'd for 8-32. I had to counter sink the 10-32 hex head bolts into the weaver #2 base mount. I then had to carefully cut off 1-2mm of the head of the 10-32 so it would be flush with the base. I had to have enough of the head of the hex screw left so a hex wrench would still fit in and be able to torque it down. I had to cut off a few threads so the screw would not be to long in the receiver and interfere with the bolt. The ring part of the mount then is secured to the base with the large knurled screws/bolts you see in the photos.

The height and placement of the Weaver mount is good. The scope sights very well when you look through the scope setting the rifle into your shoulder shooting position. If there is a technical name for this I dont know what it is called.

I'm just not to thrilled with a 2 piece mount. I may look into the havlinsales.com mossberg mount that has a weaver base and bolts right onto the side of the receiver.

This is the side mount base for a Mossberg that will bolt onto the Savage with no issues.

But to answer my question that started all this, yes a Weaver #2 base
(48402) and Weaver side mount 1" rings (49350) will bolt onto the side of a Savage Model 5, and probably the Savage Model 3 & 4's that are D&T'd for a side mount scope.

I'm sorry if bringing this up is not a good thing for some. :-[

I really appreciate the info on this thread. My grandad's old .22 is a Savage Model 5. Never shot the gun until this year (he passed away in 1981), first with iron sights, then with an old Weaver mount from my dad's Mossberg and an old 4x Weaver 3/4" scope. This gun shot amazingly well, especially considering what I can see through the scope and the creepy trigger. Shot .68 and .56 5-shot groups at 50 yards with CCI Minimag HPs. I would like to see what it could do with a brighter, clearer scope some day, and now I know what mounts to use. Thanks very much. ;D
