I got a couple of 99s in trade. They're in .300 Savage and in great shape and shoot fine. I put the tang sights on them, although both are d/t for scopes. I really like them! Plain walnut, about 1950s or so.

By the amount of case color still on those levers they weren't hunted alot.

No, both hold about 90+% of the original case. The one on top is slightly better than the one below. When I got it, the magazine follower was bent and the rifle didn't work, but my LGS fixed it in no time. Which was a relief, as I bought it (traded for it) on speculation. It had a Stith rear mount on it and rings which I took off and replaced it with the tang sight.

Gene, you mention they're both D&T'd for scopes. just wondering if they were factory drilled or not?

Is the Savage 99 stamp on the side of the receiver or did they drill through it for the mounts?

No, sadly, they drilled through the Savage 99 on top. Two places on the bottom one, one on the top...had a Stith rear mount on it when I got it, which fits (as you know) through the rear sight fitting. Since I don't hunt, I'm not a scope guy. I can squeeze about 3 MOA with the peeps.

I wish both of them were unmolested.

Stith rear mount would fit on the tang sight holes, not the rear sight dovetail. Sure you don't mean the front tube was on it?

It's the rear base, fit in the tang sight holes, not the rear sight dovetail, which I put a blank in. I wish I had the front mount because they're kinda valuable when the set is complete.

Depends on what style of rear mount you have, the early mount had a ring that wasn't windage adjustable and had one larger screw holding the ring to the base. The later version was windage adjustable and had a lot thicker base than the earlier version. The front tubes of these two variations were alot different as well and also had different dovetails, they were at an angle and they sent three different size dovetails with them with a note saying you had to send the other to back to the factory when you figured out which dovetail you needed. Definitely complicated.

I've got a front tube mount here but I've got a feeling neither one of us wants to get rid of our Stith parts, heh heh.

Mine is windage adjustable. I can see how they were popular. When I got the rifle, it had conventional bases on the front.

That was my grandpa's favorite hunting rifle! My brother has been trying to find one for a long time, since my grandpa's got given away to someone else! Any chance you'd want to part with one?

Thanks

Joel, Savage 99EG's in 300 Sav are the most common 99 out there, they made thousands of them in that caliber, just have a look around it won't be hard to find one. Try Gunbroker.

Wow, you weren't kidding, some people really think they've got gold on there.

99EG's are like Winchester 94's in 30-30, everyone has one.

I'd check some pawnshops or local gunshops near you. Problem with GB is that it's the same guns going by week after week because they're priced like that, they don't really sell at those prices. They're usually $500.

This is what they sell at:

I wouldn't sell either one of mine for $500....I like 'em too much! :)
