708 to .308?

Hi All,

I am trying to verify that I have correct information in regards to changing a 708 into a .308. From what I could find via google/search it looks like all I am going to need is a new barrel chambered in .308. Is this correct? If it matters I have a Stevens 200 in 708, gotta love Academy. Thanks all.

Yep, thats it. Rip the 7 off and twist the 308 on.

I guess this would work just the same for going from 7-08 to 243? Academy price is great but wish they had a few other calibers.
By the time I buy a new barrel, wrench, gauge, etc wouldn't it be just as cheap to buy a Savage 243 somewhere at regular price?

Would depend on several factors i.e. will this be the only conversion and will you buy new barrel or use factory take off. I've had occassions when it would have been cheaper mainly because of barrel price. Usually with take offs its not bad and tool price amortrized over numberous conversions makes this process very attractive. Used racks in my area have surplus of 30-06 and 7mmRemMag rifles so there prices are rock bottom. Waiting for them too drop more with sour economy hopefully for some good buys.

I was looking for a .308 with plans on getting a Shilen anyways. Plus I am a lefty to boot. The cheapest LH .308 I could find new is $450 plus the cost of the bbl would take it to around $730. Even from Northland a LH action is $375 plus bbl cost. So I figured;

Option A (11FL + bbl)
$450+$280=$730

Option B (Receiver + bbl)
$375+$280=$655

Option C (The route I am taking Stevens 200 + bbl + LH conversion via SSS)
$179+$280+$250=$710 and I get it trued and timed to boot.

I realize I don't have things like wrenches, gauges, stocks etc. factored into the above prices but I figure I would need them all regardless of which route I choose, so I call it a wash. Does this make sense or am I missing something?
