I think that a stock scope rail screw is #6-48. I have heard of people going to a bigger rail screw. I now out of necessity (Don't Ask!) need to tap my action to a bigger screw.... Do others usually got to the #8-40 screw?

Thanks!

NOTE: I just noticed there is an Optics Section...If this need to go there could mods please move it?

Yes go to 8-40. You will need to ream out the scope rail as well generally unless your switching to a rail with that size supplied

Oh lord, ream out, machinist heresy ! I think you mean drill out?

You will need the right size drill bit to do the hole for the 8-40 screw. I don't have my chart but don't just grab one. The charts are on line.

If its an odd ball bit, buy it, not worth a mistake (again)

8-40 requires a #28 bit

Buy several drills, cobalt is best, they're cheap and chances are you'll knock the cutting edge off unless you're very careful as you're only cutting with the corner of the cutting edge. GO SLOW, use a cutting oil and drill press if you have access to one.

Be sure you have the right grade of tap. http://www.newmantools.com/taps/taptech.htm

I hope this helps.
