I have two of these same barrels in 243 caliber, and was wondering if it's possible to ream one out into a 6mm AI without cutting too much off the length. It's a factory 26" barrel. Would like to keep as much length as possible.

thanks Guys.... Dan

It is a close one. It is all determined by the shoulder diameters. I think they are within a few thousands of an inch. You may have to push it back a 1/2" or something but my bet it is doable.

Looking at the chamber prints, it looks like a straight forward job.

243win Shoulder = .454

6mm/244 Rem AI shoulder = .456

Going from 243win to 6mm Rem (non-AI) is where you would have to sacrifice a hair of barrel length. But 243win to 6mm AI things look pretty good to me.

6mmRem is slightly larger in body diameter at the rim end than the 243, and longer in all other dimensions, except it has less body taper, so....

Provided the improved taper is at least 243win standard taper (or flatter)...

Then the AI will fully ream the 243 chamber...without losing any barrel.

The standard 6mmRem chamber will however require at least 18.6mm (almost 3/4 inch) off the end before chambering to fully clean out the 243;

Note the 6mm has a 'steeper' leade angle (3deg vs 1.5deg) however the longer length plus 3mm freebore prevents any leade 'overlap'...

Another place where Remington dropped the ball. No reason why the 6 mm Rem, and the 280 couldn't have been more popular than the 270 and the 243. Both are better cartridges.

I could not agree more.

WOW... we have some smart cookies on this forum. All your help is appreciated very much.

i guess i was wanting a 6mm rem AI because i wanted to use at least one of these barrels for something hotter than just a plain jane 243. I coyote and deer hunt with a 22-243 AI, and it's a screamer and a killer with 80 gr amaxes at 3558 fps. I just want to make these barrels do something serious, without getting into any Big Cost. I'm still considering what I should do, but your helpful information has given my hope for some king of change... thanks so much...Dan
