After researching different powders for the .308 Winchester, It sounds like IMR 4166 should be among the top contenders. But all the good things I have read about it has been published by the manufacturer. I was wondering if it truly lives up to the hype ?

Is the copper fouling eraser a real game changer, or just a sales pitch ? It would be great if we could eliminate the clean bore flyers by not having to clean the bore so often.

I like that it is not sensitive to temperature.

Hodgdon claims this powder is great for match grade performance in the .308 Winchester.

Any Thoughts ?

Try it...but know that it's not temp insensitive and the clean bore thing is what you think it is.
I don't shoot a 308 but if I did I'd start with varget and RL-15 maybe 4064.

4064 is my go-to for 308, but if I couldn't find any, I wouldn't hesitate to use either RL15 or Varget... All 3 have well established reputations in this cartridge.

Am shooting varget out of my 10T 308 with great success. If you have a 20 inch barrel or longer, varget will work great for you. 4064 is my backup. Varget is hard to find though. 4166 works but costs a little more. What rifle are you shooting 308?

I have the 10 FCP-SR .308 with the 24" barrel. I am about to join a club that has moveable steel targets out to 1000 yards.

I know that Varget, 4064, and 4166 all have burn rates that are very close to each other. All three are very well liked in the .308 community.

I guess my main question would be: Does the copper fouling eraser in the 4166 really work as good as Hodgdon claims ? For me the first shot is the most important shot. I have learned by experience that the first two or three out of a clean bore are flyers. It would be nice if we could shoot two hundred rounds without any copper buildup in the bore. So does this really work or is it a sales gimmick ?

For me the first shot is the most important shot. I have learned by experience that the first two or three out of a clean bore are flyers.

And that is why I do not "clean" the bores of my rifles. When I'm done shooting, I run the bore snake through once or twice, then when I get home I'll clean the chamber & run a lightly oiled patch down the barrel... That's it. When I pull the rifle out and put the first round through, I know exactly where that cold shot zero is going to be.

Don't overlook IMR 4895. Works great for me in several different calibers.

Copper isn't always a bad thing. Some barrels do better with some copper fowling, some dont. As far as the 4166? Try it, if it works for you?....run with it.

The only way to not have to deal with copper is a good hand lapped barrel. It won't matter what you shoot as far as powder or bullets with a lapped barrel. Savage barrel's can be so rough inside
It'll never smooth out completely. I ran l steel wool with Sweets for a long time on my 10 fp, finally got sick of it and gave the barrel away. Also top barrel's cold clean bore shot will be right on as well as a cold dirty bore shot. There for me my rifles can be put away clean with no worries of POI shifts,, and no fliers to boot.

Second the 4895. Consistent performer in multiple 308s with multiple bullet weights for me. Nosler shows it most accurate in their tests with 175 grainers and it worked for me the best w that bullet. Still have yet to try 4064 tho

4895 is my go to powder for 308, and then just developed a great load for my 223 with 4895. Stuff works great.

I didn't recommend IMR 4895 off the top of my head. I have developed loads for every thing from 22 Hornet to 7mm Rem. mag with it, and it works, it just takes some time am effort.
Something a lot of people don't want to do, there are no magic formulas.
