stainless or not stainless

i bought this 110e series j 7mm rem mag. but i cant tell if the barrel is ss or cm. the action its blued. but the barrel is silver with what looks like faded black paint. its barrel is stamp 7mm rem mag 110e series j. it has had sites on the barrel but there gone now. i tried a little spot on the barrel with some blueing but it didn't take at all. so is it ss?????? ???

I'm told that a magnet will not be attracted to many types of stainless. Odds are that if a magnet sticks, it's not stainless.

i used a fridge magnet ant it did stick. but the bluing still didn't. :-\

300 series of stainless is non-magnetic but is not used for making guns. The 400 series in guns is magnetic.

Yup, barrels are 416 stainless and are magnetic. I had a .22 that I tried to tuch up the blueing and couldnt get it to take. I ended up sanding the barrel and cleaning it with acetone then, the cold blue took just fine.

Well, I knew that some stainless was non magnetic and some was magnetic, just didn't know which. At least I learned something new.

well i left it bare for the last two days with finger prints all over it and there is still no sign of rust. did they make a 110e series j in ss? its a 7mm rem mag.
