I've never dealt with muzzle devices before so I'm unsure what I need to look for and I don't just want to leave bare threads hanging out.

I want a thread protector at minimum but would consider a brake

Do I just look for anything listed as 5/8 x 24 or is there another measurement I need? I noticed xcaliber doesn't list a brake that matches this od. Is it normal to use a break or protector of a different ODER?

any 5/8sx24 muzzle brake will work as long as its the correct caliber...a .308 brake will work for anything with a .308 bullet or less but the brake will be a bit more effective if its caliber specific.

5/8-24 is the standard thread spec for 30-cal stuff in the USA.
Typically this means anything larger than 22-cal, but less than 338.
As mentioned, many muzzle brakes are blanks, that need drilled to your desired bore diameter. That way they only make a single thing, and you have to deal with the details.

I bought one of these (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IHOP9MA/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1) back when they were still available, and it fit my same contour X-caliber barrel almost perfectly. May thread protectors will list their outside diameter too, which helps match them up. It's both aesthetically pleasing and protects the muzzle thread shoulder from damage. The one in my link was the perfect OD and only a tiny bit long, but that's better than too short when it comes to protecting the threads and crown.
