Been a long wait....but it finally happened.

Since taking up shooting sports a few years ago (like I really need another hobby) I've been shooting targets only when his opportunity to go deer hunting fell into my lap.

So I have this picture of my dad proudly standing next to a nice buck taken in 1941 on Christmas leave from the Army. He'd just graduated from boot camp and bought a sporterized 30-40 Krag from a local pawn shop. He's holding the gun in that picture, and as far as I know, he never shot it in my lifetime.

It sits in my closet now, and every now and again I'll take it out, clean it and maybe put some holes in paper with it. It still shoots quite well.

This hunt was going to be in a blind, and I took the mature doe at about 90 yds. shooting with a peep sight just at sunset under cloudy skies.

She ran about 100 yds and collapsed, shot through the lungs, and with that I finally closed the loop on my dads hunt some 75 years ago, shooting a gun made in 1889 and saw action in the Spanish American War.

All that didn't matter to the doe, of course.

In about 5 weeks, when he's home from college I hope to take my son out to get his first deer. It'll be a buck of course.

Can't wait!

Good for you, I started hunting in 1947, and those Craigs were still quite popular back then.
A bit odd looking with that box on the side but about the smoothest action you will find.

I think my dad paid about $25 for this one, but back then that was probably a months wages for an enlisted man.

I'll have to wait until I install tapi-talk on my phone to post a pic. All I can do on my laptop is post a link to a pic. and that just sucks.

Send me the link. If I can open the link, I will try to post it for you.

The copy and paste function is alive and well.

Looks like Monday we are scheduled for a Buck hunt for my son. Many American dollars are involved, but I feel like it's one of those "once in a lifetime" events that can't be passed up. He's got some good looking bucks on his farm, so pics will no doubt be forthcoming.
And then on Friday, we have a two doe apiece hunt planned. Five of us going. That's a lot of doe, for not much dough.:tea:
The Deep freeze is starting to look a bit small.:o

Congrats on your first deer. They are always special, but with your dad's rifle I assume even more so. Any update on the other hunts?

Success! Son got a very nice mature White Tail Buck with a shot to the heart at 220 yds. The deer took two steps and went down. Used a borrowed 243 Savage.

Now if I can just figure out how to post pics from my Macbook Pro or iPhone.....

The doe hunt went south, cancelled the day of due to last minute conflicts. Still, with a buck and a doe in the freezer, we'll be set for a while.

That is great to hear.

Get the photo bucket app for your phone or computer. I use it to post from my phone. You just have to tap the share icon of the photo you want to post, then select copy link. It gives several options, but I always choose image. All you need to do from there is paste it into your reply.

Very nice buck, a nice mount would be in order for that one.
Especially for a first buck. Skull mounts are nice also and maybe $400 cheaper.
