Howdy, I am new to the savage 99 world and have encountered a problem. I just shot my 1913 mfg Savage 99 in .22 HP. It has a Lyman tang sight on it and at its lowest setting it shoots way high and to the right. How can I correct this, as the from sight is not dovetailed into the barrel. Thanks!

You probably need to shim your tang sight a bit on the right side using thin strips of metal or plastic. At what range were you sighting it in? If at 50 yards, it may just shoot high at that range... you might check trajectory data for your round to see what to expect at 50/100/200 yards...

Curious.

Are there any markings on that aperture?

It looks like a Watson cup but if it was it would have to be turned down to fit a Lyman tang sight.

The aperture doesn't really fit, but it does the job. I guessed it wasn't the right one for that Lyman but that's what it came with. Sight in range is 100 yds and it's like 5" high and like 4" to the right. I guess I need a taller from sight blade to fix elevation. But how do I fix the windage?

Shimming will fix the windage... you might try taking out the aperture and using it as a ghost sight...

It looks like the front sight blade is pinned in, replace it with a taller sight blade. Easy to make if you can't find one. Old school it if you have to, hacksaw and a file to make new sight. I've had to do it to several of my older pieces.
Seems like shimming the rear sight will correct the windage problem. These old classics are a hoot to play with and get back to a functional condition.

BTW, what's the odd looking piece in the second picture with the big boxy magazine??

That is my French MAS 49/56 chambered in 7.5 French. Sweet little gun and surprisingly accurate at 100 yds.

Taller front sight. As for the 22 High Power, if you reload, the bore diameter is .228, not .224.
