Just bought a new 10FLCP 308 and am having some issues with it. Using new Nosler 308 brass with 168gr SMK have found the rifle will not take anything more than about 2.65" (was trying for the standard 2.8 COAL recipes listed in my manual and online). Anything higher winds up with the bolt jamming before it fully closes.

Was thinking of trying to break the gun in first with some manufactured ammo at 2.6" (.308 Win soft point) and seeing it the rifle will take 2.7-2.8" reload recipe afterwards. If not, what are my options? Would a gunsmith be able to fix this or do I have to take this up with Savage?

Take a brass case and loosen the tension enough that you can barely slide the bullet in and out by hand. Set the bullet in to about a 2.95 COAL. Then slowly load the bullet, very carefully pushing the bolt until you can lock it. Then extract the dead round and measure the oal. This is your 'to the lands' length. Honestly, 2.65" is way short. My fcp-k is good to about 2.84" with the 168smk.

Broke in the barrel with shorter 2.61" 150gr manufactured rounds and still can not get it to accept anything longer than 2.65". In fact the bolt would sometimes jam after firing. Local gunsmith suggested to take it up with Savage due to it being a number of reasons. So will get to see how Savage's warranty and repair system is like.

I would send it back to the factory.
