Grains per CC chart

Due to being limited to a COAL of about 2.65 (instead of the standard 2.8) in my .308, I am running into real estate issues with powder in my shells with Varget. Does anyone have a guide on grains per cc on the following powders? Am trying to figure out if there is a load that would give me more breathing room over Varget.

You may want to try a longer drop tube, (I use a 10 inch) and slowly dropping the powder. (Say over three sec.) I have noticed that these two things greatly affect the level of powder in the case. It is the same weight but it packs it in there better.

QL says varget weighs .89 grams per cc.
Water weighs 1 gram per cc.

What bullet are you loading ??

SMK 168gr HPBT

Book lists 42gr as the starting load for this for the above. Problem is at 2.6" I am coming close to almost jamming the bullet into the die due to the powder pushing back at the starting load.

What barrel. Sounds like a short throat. Most savages barrels I have owned have long throats.
Maybe you should have the barrel throated so you can seat that bullet at 2.8-2.9"
with whatever jam/jump you want to run.

Have you tried any RL17 ??
It might be a bit slow for that bullet at 2.6", but it just does not show pressure signs
until its very compressed with heavy bullets.

I am shooting 208 amaxes over 48.5gr at 2.9 COL. It has a density of .965 grams per CC.
Got 2600 fps out of a 22" barrel last time out. It was hot.

Savage 10FLCP brand new. My first Savage was a 22-250 with a long throat and never had this issue. Was thinking of trying to break it in with shorter manufactured rounds then see it it will load 2.8 and, if not, see what my local gunsmith can do to mod it.

That's odd. I load my 308 sporter with 208 amaxs at 2.9-2.95"
I think the lands with that bullet are over 3"

I wonder why all of the sudden Savage is changing things, slow twist 7mm-08
short throat 308.

Try some 208 gr amaxes over RL17 some time.

It should not cost much to throat a savage barrel.
