.243 swap to 22-250 possibly.

About 5 years ago I turned an older model 10 with the 4.27 screw spacing from a 20" .223 to a long heavy .243. Now I've decided it's too heavy to carry hunting so I'm looking at opinions for swapping to a 24" fluted 22-250 or a .243 off if a max 1 predator . We mainly kill 100lb Texas pigs . Will that 12 twist in the 250 stabilize something heavy enough for pigs ? I know shot placement is key .

I don't think the 12 twist will be able to stabilize anything above a 55 grain bullet. I think a 1 in 8 twist for the 60 to 75 grain bullets would stabilize though.

You could use 55gr Barnes TTSX bullets and they would be devastating. At 3500+ it would penetrate like a laser. Lots of guys I read, use the 22-250 for Texas deer.

My 8 twist 22-250 shot the 80 grain Sierra Match King with laser like precision today, going 3250 fps. Lapua brass, CCI200, IMR4451.

Last month, I took a 180 lb pig with my son's 223 shooting 69 grain SMK (Australian Out Back ammo). One shot through the heart/lungs did the trick.

My 12 twist 22-250 barrel shot the 55 grainers excellent going 3600 fps. Can't imagine that not dropping a 100 lb porker in it's tracks.

some people have successfully used the 64gr power point's in a 12 twist, but you won't know till you try them in your barrel. I'd stick with heavily constructed bullets like the tsx reccomended earlier and maybe the 64 power point as i'd be worried with a surface blow up at 22-250 velocities with light constructed bullets.

if you like your .243 and it's a shooter why not send it out to be re-profiled and/or shortened? something like a light palma contour should be plenty for hunting uses yet still handle multiple shots without burning up.

i'm a fan of short rigid barrels. have you considered going down to 20-22" and running heavier bullets like a 105 in your .243? a 20" 243 with 105's would still hammer hogs with authority unless your taking very long shots.

I like the .243 , I weeded out everything I had to work with just one caliber because I'm so indecisive it's stupid . And it saves a ton of money (for me at least) . I'm researching and looking trying to figure out which way to go here . Get a new lighter shorter barrel or rework this older "j" barrel to something manageable. I quit reloading when we left Colorado as now there's nowhere here for me to do load development so I'm just shooting factory loads. Problem is I've had a pac nor barreled 6br that loved 70grn noslers and now I'm ruined on accuracy expectations! It is what is it will get there , good thing is im patient

I get good accuracy in my 1/12" twist 22-250 barrel with Hornady 60 gr HP's.

My 1/12 shot Nosler 60 grain Partitions very well. I don't think a pig would walk away from a Partition. I will try some Nosler 64 grain bonded when I use up the Partitions as the bonded bullets are much cheaper, especially from Shooters Pro Shop.

you may be in luck staying with the .243 then. ruger may breath new life into the cartridge with it's precision rifle in .243. so far I see hsm is loading the 95 vld, double tap has a 105 nosler plus tons of other decent looking loads from the major manufactuer's.

if your not handloading I think you'll have a lot more options with the .243 vs the 22-250 in factory ammo. there are very few game oriented rounds for the 22-250. it's mostly catered to varmints.

lost me on the J barrel? Those 6mmbr's are sweet. I got derailed from my 6brx project with the Hilary panic. now I can start saving up again for my 6brx barrel.
