What do you guys recommend??

Recently bought a stock for my .308 Axis. That thread can be seen here: http://www.savageshooters.com/showthread.php?53599-I-messed-up-advice-needed&p=384432#post384432

I now have an extra stock of either action (.308 went on Boyd w/ long action mag). I already have a .223/5.56NATO 1:8. I have an almost 18 y/o that wants to get started distance shooting/hunting too. What caliber would you build out if you were in my boat? I'm also not opposed to not building and selling off one of the stocks. Thx in advance.

If you don't reload, I would look at building a 6.5 creedmoor. The cost per box of ammo is about the same for match 308, but you're getting much better ballistics. The 6.5 diameter bullets are really great for long distance shooting.

Hmm... I definitely don't reload, but will have to look into that. I'm not really familiar w/ the 6.5 (in either). Is that somewhere ~.260-.270?

So your recommendation is do the 6.5 on the factory short action stock?

The 260 and 6.5 creedmoor operate at roughly the same chamber pressures and shoot a 6.5mm bullet. Here is a link to one such video that gives better details than I could. You could build this round on either short action or long action. It will feed from either one.

In a long action go with a 6.5x55 Swede and heavy bullets,it'll outrun the 260.

Boy do I like the 7mm08. Everything my son shoots is DRT. Never misses with 250-300 yd shots easy peasy.

Always liked the Swede and HSM and Hornady makes match ammo for it.

The Creedmoor isn't a popular round for no reason.

The 280 is a awesome for long range and and taking game. oops.
