I have a Savage 99 that is not drilled and tapped for a scope mount and has a cocking indicator. There are two holes drilled and tapped behind the cocking indicator.

What I am looking for is a receiver/ peep sight such as a Williams Foolproof or Lyman. I would rather not settle for a flip up "tang" style sight.

Are there any sights like I want in current production?

If not, were they once made and what should I look for?

Thank you if you can help me.

Some options, the one I am aware of still being made is the Lightfoot. The others are often on ebay. I would say the most often used are Lyman 57SA and Redfield 70LH.

1) Lightfoot mount for scope using the rear tang screws and rear sight dovetail

2) Lyman 56S

3) Lyman 56SA

4) Redfield 70LH

5) Williams FP 99 (not to be confused with the FP 99S which uses modern scope screw holes).

That Lightfoot scope mount is pretty slick. I just had to comment here, although it's not a receiver or tang mounted peep sight, I just finished replacing the existing sights on my Savage 99 with a Skinner barrel mounted dovetail peep sight. I just got the dovetail barrel-mounted peep sight and a new front sight (blade, Patridge-style) today in the mail. I really liked the clean, minimal design. And after mounting the sights, when I put the rifle to shoulder, the strongest impression I got was how this rifle, fitted with these new sights, gives me such a fast and natural cheekweld when sights are aligned on target, ready to shoot. Although I'd been looking for an original buckhorn sight to fit, this got my attention after repeatedly hearing and reading about the Skinner sights. I thought the price was quite reasonable (always a factor for me) and now, having just installed the set. I really like the quality of fit and finish. I suppose a receiver or tang peep sight would be faster, or maybe more accurate, but this sight leaves the lines of the rifle more unblemished, as it were... especially for a peep sight- it's very nice.
